setting up a home network
desktop wired to a WRT54G

Laptop wireless

Problem
laptop doesn't see desktop as a Computer on the network, but will ping desktop

desktop can see the laptop through Workgroup computers but can not ping the laptop, also get a an error message when trying to access the laptop saying, You may not have privleges to access this network device

both have a Hard drive that is shared and not password protected

Windows firewall is running on both

I had an e-mail from D-Link saying that one of the POSSIBLE causes with mine was that both computers did infact have firewalls turned on and was conflicting with one another.

Another they stated was, I had to manually assign an IP address at the base computer where the router was hooked up.

I've got Windows Firewall running on all four of mine with no issues of connectivity among them.

I don't think that would be the issue...OTher than that, i'd have to be there to see how you have it all set up to see what is going on...

This isn't a network problem.

Make sure you have two users with the same usernames on both computers with the same password.

Although this probably won't fix your problems, I suggest aftermarket firmware for the WRT54G. I used that router at a place I volenteered and we hated the factory firmware.

But to make sure: All your computers are in the same workgroup? I would make sure the names are similar too (for me personally, I name my computers by laptop/desktop with a number) then just type //computername in an IE window to access files.

Heres the Question, What Deffinition do I need to permit to allow file and print sharing.

I enabled windows file shareing but still gives me trouble
if anyone would happen to know

Thank you everyone for your help, My parents thank you to

Dang it forgot to mention this. I was gonna also mention that Norton sometimes will not let computers or laptops pick up wireless signals. I also had to disable my Norton Security for a little bit to configure mine.
