Hey I wonna import a 1997 ford Mondeo 2.5 here is the description : .

This is a 2.5 v6 mondeo, the car is in good condition for its age, only minor scratches and dings but nothing major. The car has been modified i.e.

17inch alloys, all with good tires
smooth trunk lid
full st24 bodykit
full st200 stainless twin exit exhaust system
short shift gear lever (original also included)
de-catted
induction kit
ford racing ignition wires
front foglights
tinted windows
Tinted headlight inners
Lowered suspension
Hidden towbar (behind no. plate)
This car has full leather interior with heated front seats, electric drivers seat, cruise control, heated front screen, traction control, air conditioning etc.
these cars did cost over 20 grand when new so get a bargain car. This is a real headturner and sounds awesome.
Low points:
Rear window not tinted, bit of a pig to do yourself.
steering wheel looks worn at top, but to be expected.
hatch back lid requires new gas struts, apparentley st200 ones are better due to weight of spoiler.

Needs foglight surrounds for front bumper to finish off, 20 bucks each at ford.

now while im still kinda poor i may have to either swap my Contour vins and emblems and title it as a contour ??? (what are the consiquences? legal or not ..) or I can go through with the whole U.S. DOT thing now ... either way i will get it u.s dot approved but like i said will i need to park it for 6 months while i save the cash?????? what would it take to get it DOT approved and has anyone ever tried this ???

Thanks

Doesn't matter... if the car is somewhat complete, it's not exempt from the NHTSA regs... read EVERY page on the link provided...

WAY too much stuff has to be changed on a Mondeo to make it comply. Wouldn't be too bad if stuff off the Contour actually bolted up, but it doesn't...

So really what you'd have to do, is get a Registered Importer to petition the NHTSA to allow that certain year/trim Mondeo to be allowed to enter the US. Then you would have to have said RI convert the car to meet all DOT/EPA guidelines (you can't do it yourself, only an RI can convert one).

These are the cars that have been petitioned and are allowed to be modified. If it's not on that list, it's not coming over without a petition... no if, ands, or buts!
  • Note that there are European spec cars in the States... these are foreign nationals and are allowed to have them here for the duration of their tour... after that, they MUST be taken out of the US. Can't be sold here, either...

An example I saw on the cost of conversion was $6,000 for a mid 90s M-B S Class and $15,000 for a Skyline.

...and that's already on top the cost of the car and shipping.

Now, you can take it to Canada from what I've heard... But to bring it to the States, have fun with that!

    spdy-

this is NOT a good plan! even if you were well-to-do with LOTS of discretionary income, such a conversion (to comply with nhtsa/dot specs) is not for the faint of heart. you could "....park it ...." for 2 years and still not have it done!

don't even think about it! it is a nice car, but move on.
