I've been searching all over, I find no mention of this shield ever being decontented. Or course I didn't find anything about the black plastic protective cover inside the trunk lid being decontented, but I thing I remember a discussion some years ago that it was?
I just added a 98 Mystique LS built 08/98 w/43k to my garage to keep as a back-up for my older 98 Mystique LS built 07/97 w/64k.
The engine compartment was very dirty without the raditor splash shield.

I'll have to get one at junk yard I guess cause everything so much cleaner and protected from stone damage.

I don't know when, but they were decontented from all but the SVT. My guess is that it was late 98 or 99. The only advantage of having them missing is that the oil filter is easier to change. The disadvantages of having it missing include water in the horns causing early failure.

My 98 Contour (base model) built 9/97 does not have a splash screen.

When I crawled under to look for the fog light harness, there was nothing between me and the horn. And I'm replacing the water pump now, and there's nothing between the spilling coolant and the bucket.

I don't know if it used to have one, or if it didn't come with one, I'd have to double check with the previous owner. Knowing the previous owner, I'd lean toward it never having had one.

My car also did not include a splash shield, built 11/4/97.

This bean counter mentally and Detroit wonders why Honda and Toyota sales are so good? Just one of those touches that makes a difference in longevity.
Well it's important to me, anyhow!
Now I've got to find a front license plate holder, ah that should interesting?
