44=RH Primary Crash Sensor Not Mounted to Vehicle Properly

What does this code mean exactly? It doesnt sound very good.

There is a story with this as well:

What happened was my wheel bearings on both sides were going out, and the day I took the car in my check engine light came on. The people fixed the bearings and said the check engine code was "generic" and could mean 50 different things. They suggested replacing the PCV valve and hose b/c it was the original and it wouldnt hurt. The price for replacing the PCV was reasonable so I said ok. Well, on my way home the check engine light came back on. I dont know what I should do.

AND the airbag light came on and it is 44.

AND when I am in idle the tachometer wavers from slightly over 1000 to slighty under and it feels like the gas doesnt want to flow when I am driving the expressway. BTW- they did check the plugs and hose. And they checked the fuel pressure and said it was fine.

So basically, my car is falling apart and I dont know what to do. If anybody, anybody, can help me I would forever be indebted to them. Thank you in advance for you response

Welcome to CEG If you have the Duratec V6 you might need new ignition wires and spark plugs, or the Upper and Lower intake manifolds need cleaning or a new gasket. The IAC control may need cleaning out. Older 1995 -1997 Contours and Mystiques sometimes have wiring issues if they are in hot climates. The airbag 44 code might just mean that sensor has a poor wiring connection. Total lack of power with a hiss noise means the catalytic converter(s) needs replacing, plugged up, car can't exhaust. Did the shop provide a code number for the generic code?

As mentioned by Fav, do get the CEL code and post it. Autozone and Advance Auto will scan it for free. One other reason I can think of for a bad idle is a broken hose but post the code and we will know better.

The following is from the Ford TSP (Technical Service Publication):

Normal Operation

The air bag diagnostic monitor measures the resistance between Pin C2-20, Circuit 9 (BR/BL) and Pin C1-3, Circuit 91 (BK/R), diagnostic monitor reference ground. If the air bag diagnostic monitor measures a difference of more than 2.0 ohms between Pin C2-20 and Pin C1-3, it will flash Code 44.

Note that Circuit 9 (BR/BL) is grounded to the side of the RH primary crash front air bag sensor case and the case is grounded to the vehicle at its mounting point.

Possible Causes

High resistance on Pin C2-20, Circuit 9 (BR/BL) to ground can be caused by:

(1) A poor connection due to loose mounting or dirt at the RH primary crash front air bag sensor and bracket mounting location.

(2) An open or damaged wire in Circuit 9 (BR/BL) from Pin C2-20 of the air bag diagnostic monitor harness connector to RH primary crash front air bag sensor.

(3) An open circuit inside RH primary crash front air bag sensor.

I will call tomorrow and get it so i can post it on here. Another coincidence that I am noticing is that I smell fumes in my car and the perimeter when I am done driving from work. I have a feeling it is my catalytic converter that is causing this ruckus.

Is it difficult to clean the airbag sensors? I notice on another thread they are at the corner of the grill and headlights. I just don't know what they look like.

And lastly, would the work I had done on my car have any bearing on the airbag code? I had both bearings done and they were clunking around in there to see why my engine light was on. I was contemplating unplugging my battery and resetting my computer to see if all these lights go off.

I am just anxious about driving around with all of these potential problems. This weekend my dad said he will look under it for me to see what he can do. Ok, thank you again for responding and I hope to get this all resolved by this weekend. I really love my Contour, being it is my second one (I had to sell the last one b/c i went to college), and I dont want it to take a crap on me....

Do you have a Duratec V6 or Zetec I4? Open the hood and look at the engine.

" Another coincidence that I am noticing is that I smell fumes in my car and the perimeter when I am done driving from work. I have a feeling it is my catalytic converter that is causing this ruckus."
Do the cheap catalytic converter test. Plugged exhaust test.

For the Duratec, a good cheap way is to remove the O2 sensors, in this order (and see if the performance improves). Uninstall Bank 2 lower (radiator side) to determine if main cat is plugged, reinstall Bank 2 lower and then uninstall Bank 2 upper (radiator) to determine if Bank 2 precat is plugged, reinstall Bank 2 upper and then uninstall Bank 1 upper (hardest one, close to firewall) to determine if bank 1 precat is plugged. You don't need to mess with bank 1 lower as bank 2 lower will also be a test of that issue too (if it is an issue). Battery needs to be disconnected before uninstalling and installing O2 sensors.

Zetec test for blocked (plugged) exhaust.
A good cheap way to test for a blocked exhaust is to remove the upper O2 sensor, and see if the performance improves. Battery needs to be disconnected before uninstalling and installing O2 sensor. Good luck.

Make sure the battery cables are disconnected from both terminals (and no chance of accidently touching the terminals). And wait 15 minutes or so before beginning to clean.

Probably unrelated.

"I was contemplating unplugging my battery and resetting my computer to see if all these lights go off."
Reset by pulling Fuses 4 and 11 (in the Power Distribution Box next to the battery) for a minute or two.
