Sooo I live at an apartment complex that is home to mostly college students here at Grand Valley. I was really upset to see last Sunday morning that my car had been keyed and my foglight had been kicked in.
This is the second time I have had an SVT get keyed. This time is much less severe, being about a foot to a foot and a half long on the front bumper right by my driver's side headlight. My passenger foglight got kicked in, so it aims at the sky.
It really infuriates me, because through the year, there has been several instances that my things have been attacked. For example:
-Someone's car got egged, and there was eggshell shrapnel on my T-red.
-Some drunk kid threw a half-full 2-liter bottle at some other kid who was taunting him as I was walking to my T-red, and being that it was across a parking lot and he had no aim (being drunk), it hit my reflector panel and blew a hole in it.
-Our door to our apartment had a rock thrown into it and now there is a large dent that we will likely have to pay for.
Several other instances have occurred, and it drives me nuts. We pay a security deposit so we don't mess their living complexes up. Are we supposed to just forfeit all protection of our own things? There is 1, yes 1, security guard, who is usually only out on weekends, and it obviously doesn't help at all.
Does anyone know if there is any way I can hold my apartment complex liable for any of the damages? I am NOT trying to be cheap at all, I am just getting sick and tired of incurring all of these BS expenses myself!!!
That is my rant, Peace,
-Jordan

First, keep times and dates that all these things are happening. Second, call the police and report these kinds of things so there is a record of them in the legal sense. Third, make sure that you are reporting each and every one of these instances to your apartment management. Fourth, make sure that you are documenting these instances with pictures.
That's a good start. And if the apartments won't do anything still? Well, then it's time to call the agency in your state that monitors the apartments.

That really sucks. I hope you confronted that drunk who threw that 2-liter...but then again he was drunk so what good would it do I'd do what the above person said. There is no way that should be going on.

Hidden cameras would do you good. Definately call the police and let them take care of the problem and hopeful the complex will make the person(s) pay for the damages.

You should ask to get out of your lease and move. If they won't start putting your rent into an eskrow account and when you go to court explain the situation to the judge. You can likely get legal advise as well. -Andy

The problem with America is stupidity.
I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment
for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety
labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

My car got keyed as well last semester while it was sitting in the parking lot of my apartment complex. It's not the only issue I have had, either - people have also messed with bikes. My roommate found his bike out in the parking lot one night, and it looked like it had been either run over or beat to hell because the frame and wheels were bent terribly. Someone stole the horns from my bike, and on my birthday weekend while I was out having fun, someone decided to kick the back wheel, which bent it just enough to affect the performance of the back brake. All that happened in a short period of time, and we decided from them on to keep our bikes inside.
As for the vandalism of my car, someone scraped a line in it, from the passenger side fender, down both passenger side doors, and across the rear fender and down to the rear bumper. Needless to say, I was pissed as hell. I had a talk with the property manager before I called the police to file a report. After I filed the police report, I filed with the insurance company for damages and got $600 to cover the repairs. Their estimate was $650, minues the $50 deductable. So I know what you're going through, and I'm damn sure living somewhere else next year.

Get a bunch of people together, have a lawyer draw up a letter and take it straight to the landlord(s). Once they see the potential for money to be taken out of their pockets by lawsuits, they will invest in the proper security.
I feel your pain. My SVT got egged one night and the shell actually dug into the paint. Looks like teethmarks. Also one morning I hopped into my explrer that i use for work, only to discover i was sitting on shards of glass. Someone tossed a rock through the windshield. It was raining too...sucked major @$$. But, my SVT was parked right behind it and was untouched, so i can't complain...no way for me to do anything about it though, definitley a random jerk off since anyone looking to piss me off would have went for the car.
