can the front wheel bearings go bad and still pass the push/pull test? i ask because after replacing the axles (due to cv joints) and the front struts (they were in great need) i still have a strange sound that i believe can best be descibed thus:

i have been searching but it appears that no one has stated whether this can happen. my mechanic friend who is doing the work says that the bearings pass the push/pull test but they still sound bad to me when driving according to the descriptions i am reading here. btw, he said that the tie rods and other stuff appeared ok when he replaced the struts and axles. i also read ( i forget who stated it) that cupped tires may cause this as well. thanks

Yes.. Bearings CAN pass the push/pull test at first. How long until they finally fail that test is a matter of driving style, climate and the actual way the bearing failed within the hub.

This isn't often, but to answer your question, they can.

smart move. If you are already "getting your hands dirty" you might as well fix the bearings.
