I have had the check engine light on for a while. When I check the codes it says P0171 - System too lean. I get this code on both banks. I took the car to a dealer who told me I needed new intake manifold gaskets for $300. I told him thanks for the info, paid him his $75 check out charge and replaced the gaskets myself. Three days later the same code came back on.

Got a free check engine coupon from a different dealer and he told me that the intake manifold needed removed so they could clean the egr passiges. When I do the suck test the car immediately stumbles so I don't think there is anything wrong with the egr.

Why is it that I agree with the term stealership?

Anyone want a '99 Cougar V6-MTX in excellent shape for $5000? Make me an offer.

Did you torque the bolts to specs when you reinstalled the UIM/LIM?

Autozone and Advance Auto does free scanning (although it is more of a code read rather than a real time scan).

From TSB,

P0171 - System Too Lean (Bank 1) The Adaptive Fuel Strategy continuously monitors fuel delivery hardware. The code is set when the adaptive fuel tables reach a rich calibrated limit.

Fuel System:
· Contaminated fuel injectors
· Low fuel pressure or running out of fuel (fuel pump, filter, fuel supply line restrictions)
· Vapor recovery system (VMV)

Induction System:
· MAF contamination
· Air leaks between the MAF and throttle body
· Vacuum leaks
· PCV system concern
· Improperly seated engine oil dipstick

EGR System:
· Leaking gasket
· Stuck EGR valve
· Leaking diaphragm or EVR

Base Engine:
· Exhaust leaks before or near the HO2S
· Secondary air concern

Powertrain Control System:
· PCM concern
