I'm selling my desktop and laptop to upgrade to a faster, more capable laptop. I need something that can multitask. I will be running ultraflex (program for cutting vinyl), illustrator, photoshop, and quickbooks It needs lots of memory. and a decent screen. I dont know enough about them to make a smart decision on my own, so i was wondering if any of you had some recomendations... Oh!....I can't spend a fortune either. TIA

I just picked up one of these . 1.8 GHZ AMD 64 Turion processor, 512 RAM, 100G HD, DVD-RW, integrated wireless, 15.4" Crystal Brite widescreen, extended life battery. Everything I was looking for and a touch over $700 made this an easy choice for me.

I have the same one only mine has 1 gig of RAM picked mine up for $800 (on sale). Overall, I've been happy only drawback is that it could be smaller imo. IIRC, CompUSA had an Aspire with an Intel Core Duo processor, 120 gig HD, and 2 gig of RAM on sale this week for $1200.

IMO, IBM is the only company that makes a truly quality notebook PC. You'll pay a little more, but the quality is a step above Toshiba, Dell, etc. I'm assuming you can't get your vinyl program on a Mac, but they are good too - pricey, but really good. All the other software you mentioned runs on them.
Another consideration: do you really need a notebook? If you can get away with a desktop, you can save a huge amount of money. Notebooks are cool, but they're much less reliable, and cost way more as well.

IBM isn't in the laptop business anymore, they sold to the Chinese company Lenovo a while back. Still top notch computers but the price has come down some with the sale.
The Compaq I'm typing this on is a desktop replacement for me, AMD64 2400, half a gig of memory, 40G HD, 15" screen. About $500 with rebates. I like the briteview-type screens but they can have problems with reflections so if you're going to be working someplace bright with it I'd be wary. Also get a bigger, faster HD to start with than the basic version, you'll need more space and a faster HD sooner or later. A DVD burner might be good too depending on whether you think you'll ever burn DVDs with it. If you're going to take it places often spend the extra money to get a lighter & thinner notebook, you'll appreciate it later.
As far as brands, Dell is hard to beat for value - watch techbargains.com and some of the other deal sites for deals. I like Acers too, good value for the money. My Compaq has been stone cold reliable but the external power supply failed; they overnighted me a new one so I can't really complain.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that IBM has just recently returned to the laptop business.
EDIT: Nope sorry you're right part of Lenovo. I was wrong

I would say first off what is your price range.
My Toshiba hasn't given me any troubles, spent $700 15.4in monitor, 60gb HD, 512 ram, 1.4ghz centerino(sp?).

I work for Lenovo. Hit me up on PM and I'd gladly share my employee purchase information. We have Z-series notebooks that are our widescreen offering. In addition, we recently launched our 3000 series notebooks which are designed for the more cost-conscious consumer. The N100 's are our widescreen offering in the 3000-line. I don't think we are including the 3000's in our EPP site however.

I bought my laptop from Compaq when I came to college nearly two years ago. It's AMD Athlon 64 3000+, 1GB RAM, nVidia Go 440, 17" widescreen display, CD/DVD+R burner, 60GB hard drive, 802.11g wireless and Bluetooth built in. Came with Windows XP Pro, and at the time it cost about $2000 including accessories (extra battery, desktop media cable, etc.) and a $400 full coverage 3-year warranty. It turns out the warranty was worth the price. I accidentally dropped my laptop twice in the first year, both from a couple of feet to the floor, and I had a pretty bad spill involving orange juice, after which I had to take off most of my keys and clean them. After those incidents, I was very impressed and happy with its durability, especially after an acquaintance of mine spilled a very small amount of water on hers and the keyboard fried. Just a couple of months ago, the voltage controller on the motherboard went bad, and I had to send the computer in for repairs. I'm so glad I got that warranty! They replaced my motherboard, keyboard, and case for free, a job which otherwise would have cost over $700. And my warranty is still good for another year and a half!
The only thing that irritated me was the Indian tech support I had to deal with when I sent the laptop in for repair. Not because they're Indian per se, but because every time I called TS I had a hard time understanding what the heck they were saying to me! Other than that, I don't have any complaints about the computer I bought. I don't know how the newer, smaller Compaq models are, but mine is holding up excellently.
