Won an Ebay auction for a car! â??? or did I?
Low Miles 98 Escort I won on Ebay
Well I bought a low mileage 1998 Ford Escort this morning on Ebay for my daughter. My winning bid was a little higher than I had hoped, but the car does seem exceptionally clean. Great excitement for her!
The dealership sent me this Email:
Quote:
Congratulations jed_codemaker,
You are the winning bidder on my 1998 Ford Escort with a winning bid of 5025.
To complete this transaction, please follow this link to my checkout:

If you have any questions about this process, please contact me by email at mjl_autodeal@hotmail.com or by phone at 215 884 4200.
Thank you for bidding on my auction,

I called the dealership this evening to make arrangements to pick the car up in person. I talked with their â??sales managerâ? who promptly told me they had a better local offer and had "already put it over the curb." He said something about it involving sales commissions and that the guy that runs the auctions for the dealership was out of town and not doing his job. He told me â??I bet youâ??re not happy about this, but there is nothing you can do about it â??? we always have the option to sell locally if we choose.â?
Well, hell, seems like a pretty crappy way to run a car dealership, but the bottom line is they are correct. All I can do is leave negative feedback on a throw-away Ebay ID that has 0 feedbacks.
Just wanted to share this with you guys. Reinforces the used car dealer stereotype!

Thats pretty crappy...
Would it be possible that they really didnt get the higher offer, they just wanted you to put up more money to beat that alleged "other offer"? Hey, you never know...

You'd be a lot better off with something newer like this. The dealer has lots of feedback, the ZX-2 is way more cute than a wagon, still surprisingly utilitarian as the trunk is quite roomy (especially with fold down seats), a consumer reports best buy, I had a 5 speed ZX-2 for my daughter & it was a great car, but got totalled when it was t-boned by some guy that ran a red. She was un-hurt by the way.
The auto tranny is especially tough on these little cars.
Plus you get a tachometer!
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

The seller will probably ask you to agree not to complete the transaction so that he can get his eBay final value fee returned. I wouldn't agree. Some sellers don't set a reserve price and then they refuse to sell. You can report the seller using this link: http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/seller-non-performance.html

Not for me. My daughter chose the wagon and with less than 30,000 miles, newer is relative. Nice car though!

Didn't this same thing end up happening to some guy who bought an Evo off ebay? The whole interweb was in a tizzy. IIRC, the 30,000+ page thread was on some Subaru forums.
Anyone else remember?
In the end, the dude had rights to the car since he won on ebay, but gave it up.
EDIT: CEG link, NASIOC thread (145 pages)

That sucks man, but you didn't lose out. 5 large is TOO much for that car anyway. You'll find something else. Good luck.

sounds like a repeat of what happened to whoever it was last week. Id really hate to do business with people if this kinda thing is going to be happening more and more often. Geuss that geuss to show you buying stuff over the internet just isnt that easy sometimes.

I think that dealer was completely unethical to attempt to do business in such a way.
The dealer looks a bit seedy, but here's a Mercury Tracer in your area...
