since i determined that my lower-intake-screen for my fuel-pump is not picking up the fuel , i am having a mechanic remove my FP & discard the disc and then re-intall the unit .

in the instructions i have viewed , it indicates to DISCARD the seal between the Locking Ring & FP ! this is based on a NEW FP with hardware ( seal ) being installed .

i have been unable to find a way of Buying this " MOUNTING GASKET " seperately . IS THERE REALLY ANY MAJOR REASON WHY I CANNOT RE-USE THE ORIGINAL IF IT IS REMOVED PROPERLY ???

Feedback much appreciated as it goes into the shop tomorrow .

I'd replace the fuel pump if he is going to be in there. A FP is $100. If you have returnless 99+ then get the FSVT pump that talked about in the FAQ. There is a sock filter on the pump. Just take that off and clean it with carb cleaner and put it on the new pump. Throw the disc filter in the tank on the neighbors roof.

The fuel pump mounting gaskets in general tend to swell when removed so they may not fit and seal properly. I'm not sure if this is the case with Contours, but it was common. If it is not damaged and has a good fit, you should be able to use it over, but I have always tried to use a fresh one whenever possible.

Also, when these cars were near new, throwing away the plugged disc was a good answer when it was found to be restricted. Now that our cars are aging, it would be wise to evaluate if you want to go through all that labor without replacing the pump. Although I would be inclined to not replace the pump if the screen was found to be plugged and felt that it answered the question of what is wrong, I'll admit that I have not always made the best choices in such situations. In your case, your paying for the labor. It may not hurt to go ahead and do somethig about the pump so you don't have to pay the labor twice if something more is wrong.

you should replace the green seal around the fuel pump case if your going in throught the rear seat. the original seal it difficult to reused because it loses it shape and it too large once removed.

the problem i had was not with the pump at all. it was the filter attached to the pump inside the fuel pump case. i was unable to find a new fuel pump filter without buying an complete assembley for $225

i bought a fsvt pump pump and cleaned my filter but i still had problems i ended up sticking a metal L shaped clip off a writing pen and that allowed the filter to not suck itself close under acceration which was the problem all along.

fyi the fuel pump filter that comes with the fsvt pump is unuseable because of a different design. you must also slighty modify the electrical connection that connects to the fuel pump. its easy enough to do.

i've had to play with the fuel pump at least 15 times before i got it right. i'm now the fuel pump replacement master !

-toss the round disk with the cross. its pretty much useless . and has nothing to do with why your having fuel pump problems above 4k rpms.

Don't use it, just get a new one. You'll have to stop by the stealership, but it'll be ~$10. Insurance is cheap!

Buy a new one. Worse comes to worse, you can put it in the freezer for an hour and see if that reduces some of the swell. (solvent swell is a normal property of polymers)
