When you turn the key to the on position, for how long does or should the fuel pump run (prime)? I have a 1999 2.5L Mystique (returnless style). thanks!

WHEN I HAD TROUBLE WITH MY FUEL PUMP IT TURNED OUT THE FILTER ON THE PUMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. ON MY 2000 CSVT RETURNLESS IT JUST TURNED THE KEY TO THE ON POSITION FOR A FEW SECONDS. TURN IT OFF AND BACK TO THE ON POSITION - DON'T TRY TO START THE CAR- DO THIS FIVE OR SIX TIMES AND THE SYSTEM SHOULD BE PRIMED. WORKED FOR ME. DAMN FILTER !

That's a calibratable parameter set by Ford, but I'd say most years are set for just a few seconds.

Why?

I could swear my pump that I just installed continues to run constantly (with the key in the on position). What could be causing this? I installed the fuel pump E2158 from Masters.

Even if it does run continuously with the key in the run position, I don't see the harm. Assuming you don't leave it in run for long periods of time.

The worst thing I can imagine is a quick battery drain, but who leaves it in key-on-engine-off unless doing some diagnostic work?

The trouble (or money) to find the problem may not be worth it.

How does the pressure in the fuel rail get reduced. I have around 70psi at the schrader valve?

You're running 10 psi too high. I assume you're testing pressure with key-on-engine-off.

Fuel pressure is controlled via the fuel pressure regulator located in the fuel line manifold assembly downstream of the injectors.

There are two possibilities for the high fuel pressure. Either the fuel pressure regulator is bad or the line returning fuel to the tank after the regulator is clogged.

Are you sure it's a returnless system? Mitchell shows it as returnable.

I am positive I have a returnless. I only have one fuel line connected to the fuel pump. My build date is 7/99. I check the pressure with the car off and running and it was around 70psi. Maybe the guage is wrong? Can you show me a pic of the fuel pressure regulator? Also, my fuel pump continues to run with the key in the on position.

Step 19 of the "UIM/LIM rebuild with pics." has a picture of the FPR on the right. Step 20 has a diagram with the FPR as the No. 2 part. You have to remove the UIM to see it.

So does the regulator tell when the pump should stop priming or does the ECU?
