I perfomed the UIM / LIM cleaning and gasket replacement today on my mom's 1999 Contour SE Sport. The process seemed to go alright, although I had a hard time working with the injectors because mine didn't have any of the clips mentioned in the guide, so I took my time working them out of the fuel rail. When I put everything back together, and started the car, it ran for a few seconds but quickly died. When I tried to start it again, it was very loud and wouldn't turn over. I checked the engine and did not smell any fuel, so I tried a few more times with no luck then tore it back down to the LIM. When I opened the throttle body there was a strong smell of gas, which slowly dissipated by the time I got the UIM off. The only thing out of place I noticed when I tore everything apart and put it back together was a connector I forgot to plug in at the air box (so I plugged it in when putting everything together again). Second time around, it almost started the first time, but after that it kept making loud noises and wouldn't start.
Right now I'm not sure what to do. The only thing I can think of is either a) the disconnected air box sensor flooded the engine or something the first time around, or b) I broke one of the injectors. The reason I think I could have damaged an injector was because they weren't sitting right the first time, so I tapped a few with a hammer and a socket extension (seemed like a good idea at the time...). Could I have broken an injector this way, or is there possibly something else going on that I'm overlooking? I'm only in town a few more days for spring break, so I need to get this car running again. Thanks in advance for any help.
EDIT: Just did some searching, and I found a post where someone suggested holding the throttle all the way open while starting. It's a little late tonight, but I'll try this tomorrow morning.

i find it odd that you didnt find any injecter clips... im assuming that your fuel rail isnt sitting properly...

Yeah, I assumed that I have newer-style injectors than the guide. However, if the injectors weren't sitting properly, wouldn't they shoot gas over the LIM (and I'd definitely be able to smell it outside the car)?
I tried to start it this morning while holding the throttle wide open, and it just tried and tried to start. I don't understand what could have possibly gone so wrong that it won't start. All the connections are there, nothing dropped into the engine...I'm really stumped.

I checked the plug wires and the coil back, but they're both fine because I never touched them during the process. I can't imagine what in the process would cause it not to start.
Anyone else have ideas? I've already taken everything apart and put it back together again with the same result, so I have no clue what to look at next.

1. Are you sure the LIM is set properly on the LIM gaskets? If you moved the LIM around, you might have an air leak.
2. Now this is really dumb, but are you sure the fuel line has a good connection (did you sepeate the fuel line and remove the fuel rail?)
3. Check to make sure that the EGR and AIC are connected properly and bolted on tight.
4. Make sure your TPS, MAF and air temp sensors are connected well.
5. Make sure the 2 little vacumm hoses are connected to the back (firewall side) of the UIM on the AIC (I believe?) and one vacuum on the EGR.
6. Make sure the big tube going from the AIC to the MAF accordian tube is hooked up to the AIC valve.
7. A real stretch, but pull every fuse and make sure that they are all good.
8. Pull the connector to the coil and make sure that it has a good connection. Mine didn't at first.
9. The vacumm lines on top of the UIM are connected...right?
10. The fuel injector clips are on correctly (little wire releases facing outwards)?
These are just some ideas...

Thanks for the leads. I went through each one, and here's what I came up with: 1. Are you sure the LIM is set properly on the LIM gaskets? If you moved the LIM around, you might have an air leak. This is the one part I wasn't totally sure about. The gaskets do lock into the block with the little tabs though, and when I torqued the bolts down on the LIM to the right spec, it all felt solid. I've only worked with paper gaskets in the intake system in past cars, but I can't imagine I'm missing something major while putting the new gaskets in here.2. Now this is really dumb, but are you sure the fuel line has a good connection (did you sepeate the fuel line and remove the fuel rail?)Checked the connection, looks and feels fine, never removed the fuel rail from the engine.3. Check to make sure that the EGR and AIC are connected properly and bolted on tight.Checked, connectors good, seals with gaskets also good.4. Make sure your TPS, MAF and air temp sensors are connected well.Checked, all connected.5. Make sure the 2 little vacumm hoses are connected to the back (firewall side) of the UIM on the AIC (I believe?) and one vacuum on the EGR.Checked, all connected.6. Make sure the big tube going from the AIC to the MAF accordian tube is hooked up to the AIC valve.Checked, connected.7. A real stretch, but pull every fuse and make sure that they are all good.I removed the negative cable from the battery each time I started but I checked all the fuses anyways, all good.8. Pull the connector to the coil and make sure that it has a good connection. Mine didn't at first.Pulled the connecter, seemed good, it reattached fine as well.9. The vacumm lines on top of the UIM are connected...right?Heheh, yep, all connected there too.10. The fuel injector clips are on correctly (little wire releases facing outwards)?Yep, harness aren't switched, all on correctly and tight.I took a few pictures of my LIM re-install process to see if you can spot any mistakes. I accidentally broke one of the little IMRC grommets (3rd time's a charm) so I have to wait until the local dealership gets them in tomorrow to continue. (click on thumbs) Injectors LIM gaskets on LIM on and torqued Fuel rail installed (injector clips not attached) Thoughts?

Here's Another Stretch Of An Idea... Check The Connection To Your Crank Position Sensor. It's On The Timing Chain Front Cover Closer To The Radiator. I Believe It Is Right Above And Behind Your AC Compressor. Perhaps The Engine Isn't Getting Any Spark And Is Causing A Flood Scenario. It's Odd But Sometimes After Sitting Awhile, My Engine Wouldn't Start Either. Now When This Happens I Just Wiggle THe Wires To My Crank Sensor And It Starts Up. I Know This Is A Long Shot But Worth The Try.
OOH OOh OOh.... Something Else To Try Is Checking The Fuel Line Check Valve On The Fuel Rail. Perhaps You Accidently Turned It When Removing/Installing Everything.
Also Check Your PCV Valve For Proper Fitment And Seal.
