I'm at ~160,000 miles and my baby is starting to leave little dark spots on the driveway. Seems to be leaking from several spots on the engine. Short of replacing gaskets my mechanic suggests switching to 10W30 for less leakage. Any big cons to doing this?

Might be too thick for the oil to fit in the bearing clearance... but not as bad as if you were to use say, 50 weight.

Your engine might be worn enough that it wouldn't matter anyway.

But I don't think 10w30 is going to help your leaks much.

Don't expect any appreciable change. Since there is no oil produced today that is too thin (or thin enough) for a cold start, and most engine wear is during warm up, why generate the additional engine wear in an attempt to slow down a little leak?

Jim is (as usual) correct. You may be able to slow leaks (and even improve compression, etc.) on an older engine by using a thicker oil, but don't! It may seem like an improvement, but it's just hiding the problem, and possibly making it worse. If you want the engine to last, try to find the problem and fix it.

Try adding a bottle of Valvoline Max Life additive to your oil.

Over a couple of thousand miles, the additives can cause gaskets and seals to expand a bit and add so life to them.

doesn't the manuel say 5 weight oil? Why would you run a thicker oil then that?

I agree. Why would you use a different oil then ford suggests? My shop teacher decided to try a thicker oil in his Mercades for winter driving, when we changed his oil well pulled the filter cartridge out and it was disquesting, the fins on it where all bent up and stuff. I would sincerely suggest you put 5w-30 in like the book says.

I have run it in my late dad's wagon, which was leaking all over. Stopped the leaks completely, and I haven't had to add oil since.

I have a friend who had a similar problem, and Castol's version stopped his leaks.
