Driving along this morning and my car stalling. I was able to start it up again no problem, but now there is a rattling sound coming from the serpintine belt area and the battery light is on.

Any ideas? does the battery light signify the alternator is pooched?

thx. (hope I can make it home!)

Most probably but you have to open up the hood to confirm if it is the alternator, a/c compressor or just a loose tensioner.

I am going to go for a tensioner bearing having failed. Look on the passenger side of the engine at the serpentine belt and check to see if you can get any more than about a 1/4" of movement pushing in on the belt.

Check to see if you can move any of the pulleys or the tensioner by hand, in a "wobble" fashion (technical ain't I?)

You shouldn't HAVE to, but you may need to remove the belt (3/8" breaker in the tensioner square) to be able to determine if a pulley or tensioner is actually loose.

replacement of the tensioner can be done on the car, with little to no removal of other things. It is literally as simple as removing the belt, then undoing the two bolts and removing, reverse to install.

okay. I opened it up and watchit running. all of the pulleys are spinning with the belt and the belt looks okay (replaced new when I put in a DMD a few back) With the battery light being on, and rattling noise when running, I think it may be the alternator.

I already made an appointment with my trusty mech., but curiosity got the better of me so I had to see what went wrong (since it started so suddenly i.e. rattling noise and battery light)

Well, I popped off the front passenger wheel and removed the splash guard to see the alternator.

See if you can tell what is wrong...(hehe)

If you are inferring that it wasn't the tensioner, I will take the second guess of: cracked alternator housing..

now to go look and see.

Edit: I'll take a cookie, now, please. yank that puppy out following the How-to. you'll be fine!

$399 Cdn is what I'm being charged

re-man alternator + new belt + labour.

I called aroound and the cheapest alt. I could find was $245+core.

Yeah, I let my mech bust his knuckles for that, but that How to is really good...

P.S. mech said couldn't get core since the housing was kaput. Calling around, that seems to be the case everywhere except "PartSource"
