Hello all. I have trying to solve some issues with an external drive I recently added to my computer. Its just not reading properly. My question is this. In disk management, my C: drive is labeled as "Drive 1", not Drive 0 like the LaCie(drive company) tech say it should be. Thought it was very strange but did not elaborate. Anyone have a quick answer for this? When I can get my external drive to read it will be the one given the Drive 0 assignment. May not be a big deal, I dont know. Just trying to get some feedback.

hmmm...yank off the side panel (or top panel if it's a desktop) and see if the drive is plugged into the IDE cable at the "0" or "1" termination.

I have some basic questions. Is the external connected via USB? Does XP give you a popup saying it found the external drive? Do you remove the drive often or is it always(or almost always) connected to your computer? Do you have the external jumpered as a master? When you say not reading properly what do you mean? Does the computer not see the drive? Is it saying bad data? Just need something a little more specific.
My C drive is labeled as drive 2(I have 3) so I don't think that's your problem.

it sounds like you've got your hard drive on the same IDE cable as another drive, and it's set to be the slave. It's not a big issue, as obviously the computer works...but it's not the "right" way for it to be.

It does look like I have the IDE cables in the wrong places.
As far as the drive problems go. This is external with USB, XP can find the drive but does not like reading it. "My Computer" will stop responding once hte drive is turned on. I can see a USB mass storage device in the device manager and on the Drive Management screen. It will sometimes give me an I/O error, I have never been able to get to any data once this started. I am not sure if the external is jumpered as a master, not ever sure how I would do that. Hopefully this answers some of your questions.

OK go into device manager, find the external. Right click>properties and then click the policies tab. Uncheck the enable write caching box.
The jumpers are on the back of the drive between data cable and the power hookup. It should tell you on the drive how to set the jumper to master. Windows wouldn't see my external unless I set it that way so that's what I'm basing my advice on. Has the drive been formatted?

The Drive <x> assignments are given during bootup as Windows discovers the devices. Keep the USB drive unplugged and power off/power on and C: should become Drive 0.
