need some advice... used car 20-25k. Nothing crazy, nothing old. Reliability and cost to own are very important. Has to be an auto and image is important. Needs to seem adult. Legacy Gt is out. So far I have looked at the X-type 3.0 and Q45. 2 or 4 doors.

x-type all the way. if image is important, nothing beats a jag. especially to those who think it's worth a lot more than it is!

If reliability is important I would skip the X-type. You should be able to get a 2003 M45 in that 20-25 range somewhat easy. When I sold mine at the end of the summer I got 24 for it, and they seem to go on ebay for around that, maybe even a little less. Bit lighter than the Q45 and better handling. Most of the same gizmos too.
If you like the jag's I would honestly look at a CPO XJ.There is a 2002 XJ8 at Cherry Hill Jag for 25,8xx It will be a little bit older but you are getting a flagship and not a rebadged mondeo.
Should be able to get a Lincoln LS in that range as well, about the same reliability as the Jags perhaps a little better, cheaper to fix and service though.
E39 5-series falls in there as well as does the Lexus GS. Quite a few options depending on how old you are willing to go and if you are looking for something a bit more sports sedan like or more of a land yacht.
