So my car's CEL has been on for the past few days. About two weeks ago I had it scanned and it turned up as P0153. Right after that, I ran it hard as I was going home and it disappeared. It came back on a few days later. So today I ran it hard to redline and the CEL shut off again.

So the question is, should I go ahead and replace my O2 sensor or just wait until it stays on for awhile? Is that code a big deal? Thanks.

Yes, it can wait but the engine will run on a limp mode when the CEL is on.

From TSB,

P0153 - HO2S Sensor Circuit Slow Response Bank 2 (Radiator side) Upper O2 sensor (HO2S-21) The HO2S monitor checks the HO2S sensor frequency and amplitude. If during testing, the frequency and amplitude were to fall below a calibrated limit, the code will set.

Electrical:
· Shorted/open wiring
· PCM

Induction System:
· MAF sensor (On 4-cylinder engines, if P0133 is present, this could be caused by a MAF issue - on 6- and 8-cylinder engines, this could only be a MAF issue if P0133 and P0153 are both present)
· Inlet air leaks (unmetered air)

Fuel Concerns:
· Poor fuel quality

Base Engine:
· Exhaust leaks (upstream or near HO2S)

HO2S Concerns:
· Contaminated HO2S sensor (contamination from the use of silicone-based cleaners and sealants, leaded fuel, excessive oil consumption, etc.)
· Deteriorating HO2S sensor

Edit. If you want to change the Bank 2 Upper O2 sensor;

On this 2-D picture, ignore the red box and arrow, the Bank 2 Upper is the sensor on the left of the pre-cat. The arrow is pointing to the Bank 2 pre-cat

Thanks, I think I'll go replace the sensor. I've got 95K and I'm surprised it hasn't gone out sooner.

Don't let it go for too long. If you do, you risk having that extra-rich mixture ruining yout cats.

Lucky for you, the front sensor is easy. The rear one is a real PITA.
