This is a 96 4 cyl DOHC Contour. I had the transmission rebuilt over year ago. Sometime after the transmission was rebuilt the speedo began to jump irraticaly. It seems like it is senseing the rpms more than the speed. Of course this drove the tansmission crazy. The transmission guy said it was a short in the dash. I have taken out the dash and cleaned all the connectors. The problem now seems to occur mostly when it is cold. Once the car warms up the problem goes away.

Any thoughts?

Check your Vehicle Speed Sensor connector. It may be on the way out. And scan for codes as post.

Edit. Read this thread and see if it may be similar to what your issue is.
