Couldn't agree with you more. When I turned 16 I had to learn to drive my dad's 4-speed '84 240DL Volvo wagon before he even let me touch my mom's new 95 LX Dutec ATX. It was worth it. I learned how to concentrate on my driving before I could have fun with it.

Needless to say, the first weekend my parents were out of town, I rear ended a guy while going 5mph messing with the damn radio. That messed up the hood, and it flew open on me later that weekend when both my dad and I forgot to latch down the hood. That was a pretty freaky experience going 55mph down a two lane highway. eek

I learned how to drive on the autobahn's of Germany...I guess I'm hopeless..

but it is true actually knowing how unlock the potental of the car (ie. performace driving school) will win more races and keep you alive longer than any mod we can do to our cars.
while I was in Germany I drove some cars that scared the be-jesus out of me and they were little 4 bangers like my stique but with alot more power
fact of the matter is, safty always wins...

later

Geez, when I was 16 I was driving an '81 Cutlass that was running low 13's - high 12's on the 1/4 mile. When I turned 18 I bought my SVT.
What were you running in that car??? My friends' 81 Cutlass has a 403 bored .030 over and worked, headers and a few other go fast goodies and the best he can muster is a 14.84 @ 95 mph!!

The day after I got my license (late at 17) my parents tossed me into the Pittaresi defensive/track school at Portland International Raceway. Got to spend the whole day driving Camry skidcars around cones WFO. Probably the best thing I could have done, and I can tell you for sure it came in handy when I did stupid things (accidental 4-wheel drift topping a hill in the wet towards a parked car in a '67 Volvo doing 55 in a 25, anyone?). Saved my ass a number of times in the 8 years since then, and it will in the next 50, too. Gotta know how to DRIVE that modded SE... smile

I am 17 also and I agree with most people, except, as some already know, I have a few mods on my car and I can run a 15.45 quarter. The main thing as everyone has stated is you have to know when exactly you can go and have fun and most of the time its not on the street. These cars are very safe cars, believe me, I should be dead from my first accident, cause I was acting like an immature punk on a rainy day and had a run in with a fence at speeds over posted limit, luckily I am still here, and I have learned that maybe to some you can look cool racing on the street, but you get more respect when you can do well on the track, so keep all this in mind and have fun with your new purchase. smile
