My wifes mystique (99 V6/5spd) is in need of new shocks. I was considering going with the new discount ones but wondering if I should go better. What are good stock alternitives. My other problem is I took a look at the springs yesterday and the passengers side front almost has no platic/paint on it anymore and is covered in surface rust. I am afraid it is going to snap. Is this a valid concern?

Typical rust belt spring. Nothing out of the ordinary.

Does she find the SVT's ride too harsh? If you have the springs for it, the SVT struts are pretty good.

If she wants something more biased towards ride, the KYBs are a softer alternative.

She doesn't mind the ride in the SVT. I think from what I read the springs are probably the same between the cars. What if I got the SVT's struts for the front but the cheapos for the rear does that sound like a bad idea. Does anyone have any feed back on the cheapos yet?

Don't mix struts. Keep the performance characteristics similar.

If I were you, I'd pick up some value struts from Bill Jenkins, or just some stock replacements. You might even be able to get your shop to install dealer fresh struts for you.

I just replaced my Mystique struts. I knew they were worn, but two of them were totally shot - leaking oil & everything... The ride improvement is awesome!

I think the value rears and late SVT fronts make sense. The SVT rear struts arn't anything special anyway and the late SVT fronts are not all that different, just a bit firmer.

I would say that is a non-starter. You'd have the stiffer fronts and softer rears messing up the handling. Yes, it will cost a bit more initially to go all-SVT, but if you do it right the first time, you won't have to pay to do it again.

I put the value struts on the front of my '99SE. This weekend I drove it from Spokane to Portland to give to my daughter, 80mph most of the way with a couple of 95mph blasts. The stability over the old struts was terrific although the four wheel alignment I just got didn't hurt either. I wrote a report right after I installed them, hopefully the link works:

I'm not practiced at linking to other posts, excuse me if it doesn't work.
