Have a 1996 Contour 4 cylinder. There seems to be an exhaust leak way up toward the front. Looks like leak is just before the flex-pipe (I learned from searching first that that is what the woven metal pipe is called ).

It appears that whatever the pipe is that goes to the flex-pipe has corroded at that connection point and is leaking.

Is the fix to have that pipe (what is that called, please?) that goes to the flex pipe replaced? Anyone know what I should expect to pay for this repair at a muffler shop or wherever?

For the V6 Duratec, it would be called the Y-pipe. You may want to contact Bill Jenkins at www.teamfordparts.com and see if he can help you.

Yeah, probably the same function as the "Y" pipe, but assume it is not a y-shape on the zetec. Dealer had mentioned "y" pipe too, but did not look at it so he perhaps thought it was a V-6. He said while they would like the business, they would be much more expensive than a muffler shop for this sort of thing.

That parts link has something called "front pipe". If this is the part, it is "discounted" to $664 there ...I can see why dealer sent me elsewhere.

I wonder if it might be worth your while just to have it welded shut (maybe $100 to $200 at the local muffler shop) or try "JB Weld" yourself (have not used it but I have read good things about it). You can pick up JB Weld from Autozone or Advance Auto. Good luck.

You might just need a new gasket and bolts even, if you can jack the car up, spray some PB plaster on the bolts and the next day remove them and take a look at whats up.

the flex pipe is part of the time that runs from the cat to the rear exhaust section. I believe that it contains the cat also and that is why it is so expensive.

You should be able to have an exhaust shop replace the flex pipe or seal it up by welding the exhaust leak closed

No, the flex pipe is just a woven pipe that can bend, the Main cat is always behind the flex pipe.

It goes like this: Headers->Y-pipe->Flex pipe->Main Cat->catback

not on the four cylinder
the main cat is bolted directly to the exhaust manifold

that is only partly true for a duratec, you are speaking of a atx duratec or a late 99 or 00 SVT

in most 5spd duratec it is Headers->Y-pipe->Main Cat->catback

and zetecs are

Headers->cat/flex pipe->catback
