I have a CSVT E0, 63,000 miles. Im the second owner and it receives regular maintenance and 6 quarts or more of mobil 1 for every oil change. I try to keep it easy on right hand turns so now that I am hearing a knocking, rattling sound around 3-5k when I go wot in first gear I am kinda confused. I don't hear the sound in second or third or at idle. If I rev it while in neutral it produces the same sound. Is this the infamous rod knock of the contour? This condition has not gotten any worse over the last month, but definitely not better. I'm asking this question to see how much time I might have left before the inevitable 3.0 swap is necessary. Thanks for any input, it is very helpful. Long live CEG.

-Alex

P.S.- I know I should stop driving it if it is making any noises, but frankly I don't care too much if the engine dies, I'm already saving for the 3.0.

That noise can be a multitude of things. Only on right turns?
Have a look at the left side engine/trans mounts for tightness and good condition. Your engine doesn't have enough miles on it to start throwing rods. Look for the easy things first.

Could it be a loose exhaust or catalytic converter shield?

I have a V6 SE, same mileage, and I have the same problem... Except that when I press the clutch in neutral, the noise (rattling) goes away...I'm scared to lift the car up and I dont even wanna know what that is. Doesn't look too good whatever that is? The sound is worse in 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear at around 2500rpm...

It's not going away unless you fix the problem.
