what the heck is going on! I just bought this contour as a winter beater, and now its dead.. (tranny is blown) does this mean my old AUTO contour was more reliable, and here I am thinkin the 5 speed would last me forever! and I babied this thing! and now the tranny is completely shot!
I'm super pissed off because I got to bum rides to work now, the civic is out of commision (doing an LSVTEC motor) and the contour is dead now to, I thought the 5 speeds were reliable trannies guys! what the hell did I do wrong? the car only had 144,000 kms on it to! and I know its done cus yeah, lots of fluid on the road.. and it grinds when I'm driving, normally.. pretty sure the case is cracked.
meh! the only reason I'm posting is because I'm confused... my old 96 auto contour was NOT maintained at all.. just completely crap... ran like a bag of @#&@ to.
yet to this day its still running on the road with the new owner, in even worse shape...
I bought my new contour thinking hell yeah my old one was good so why not get another.. and then bad luck hits me.. ugh
*end of rant anyone want a parts car?

I don't know, but I think its really isn't about the MTX-75 being "better" than the CD4E other than manual vs. slushbox. Both of them need to be taken care of just like the engine, and both have their share of known issues and weaknesses. My ATX died because in 55,000 miles of ownership the fluid had never been changed. I couldn't think of a better way to kill a CD4E. Same with the MTX-75; it should have regular maintenance. My MTX-75 has the typical cold-weather problems. I've been nursing it with fluid changes, but this summer I will have to have it opened up and rebuilt. Anyone who has seen my SVT knows that the previous owner was absolutely meticulous about caring for it, but apparently the transaxle wasn't included.
Unfortunately people have this misconception that trans[missions/axles] can run forever on their own.

And even if you maintain it well, eventually, something will break down and that is when you do a repair (as opposed to your regular maintenance).

Of course; that's the nature of owning a vehicle. However, I'm talking about complete and utter failure as opposed to something minor. Would you expect your engine to run for 150,000 miles if you never changed the oil and only topped it off?

My 1981 Mercury Cougar did that too (it leaked like a SOB), so don't go all Japanese eliteist on us!

thats where my issue comes in guys!!
my 96 gl, was NOT maintained at all.. NO tranny flush for hmmm, 200 000+ kms?, the only issue it had was the o/d light would flash on long drives and would slam into gears.
sometimes my me or my dad didn't do oil changes for 15,000 kms... basicly the car was neglated the worst way possible and it BARELY gave us trouble... (except when the timin belt blew once) that was costly... other then that, it was a tank.. and STILL is.
my new contour I'm almost positive it was babied... so I just don't get it! ARGH! and yes the diff is blown.
