Actually truth be told a big return means you're not managing your money as well as you could be... instead of lending it to the Feds interest-free, you should be breaking even at tax time. If you consistently get a big return, take more deductions and invest the "extra" from each paycheck into a savings plan.

Did mine up and I'm figuring a little over $200 federal and $200 state. I work full-time over the summer and winter holidays, and part-time otherwise (10 hours/week this year, was 24 hours/week last year at a much lower pay and I netted almost the same annual salary). Overall far less than I had anticipated .. perhaps I made a mistake like I did last year, that would be nice ...

Just got our refund a few days ago. Already blowing it on all sorts of things. Gotta order some parts for the 'tour, fill the heating oil tank and pay for the furnace cleaning, bought some much needed clothes over the weekend (fatty mcgee), pay off new kitty bills (vet, supplies, adoption fee), curtains for the livingroom finally (we've been making a show for our neighbors for months!), fun money for our upcoming weekend in Montreal (yay bewbs & beer). I think I'm missing some things. I can't wait for my bonus and COL increase within the next month. Big chunks of that will go to paying down principal and some sort of Caribbean vacation for March 2007.
bleh for spending money.

I got back $6,400 last year. I guess adopting my 2nd child and have my own kid last July really helps the tax breaks. Owning a house doesn't hurt either. And I already have a $4K deduction left over from last year.
Adoption+baby+mortgage=$$$$ back.

Not in all cases...
Me: Fed: $2700
State: $300
As part of my agreement with my ex, every three years I declare our son on my taxes. Getting to declare my son as a dependant increased my return a ton this year, and I always itemize for my home's interest and taxes...
