I have a 1998 Coutour SE with the V6 and 110,000 miles. At low speeds I'm hearing a repetitious hum, I think it's coming from the right front wheel. My gut tells me it's a wheel bearing going bad. Any other ideas? Thanks.

No sound when stopped. Yes, probably related to the wheel.

Right side as in passenger side? Did you install a new alternator recently or new amplifier recently? What is the Power Steering Fluid level?

Yes, right side as in passenger side. The PS fluid level is fine, and I haven't yet (knock wood) done the alternator. It doesn't make any sound when the car is stopped, this is why I think that it's a wheel bearing.

dose the sounds increase in volume with increase in speed? also does it go away when you make a corner?

99% sure it is most likely a wheel bearing

I can't hear it much past 20 MPH due to road noise. And yes, when I turn the noise goes away. I'm pretty sure it's a wheel bearing as well, I guess I just wanted confirmation. Oh well...off to the mechanic tomorrow I guess.

Depending on how handy you are, you can check it before you go. Jack the car up on the passenger side leaving the front wheel on. Now grasp the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock. Gently try to rock the tire toward the engine compartment and then back out to the fender. If you can rock it back and forth, your wheel baring is most likely shot. If you put your hands at 10 and 2 o'clock and try to rock it you can tell if it is a tie-rod end. If it rocks and you see the wheel hub move but the tierod does not, then you have a bad outer tierod. If both the hub and the tierod move easily, you may have an inner tierod bad.

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys for the welcome and the props. My father was an ASE Certified master mechanic, and I tried to learn all I could from him before he passed on last year. That is one of the tricks he taught me, trying to keep the knowledge alive.
