My 98 CSVT runs hot when engine is fully warm. I can drive around for about 20 mins and the engine remains perfectly cool. After 20 mins or so, the temperature gauge rises slowly and stops between the "M" and the "A" on the temperature NORMAL guage. I know this isnt really overheating, but it never used to do this. Could it be the T-stat? Water pump was changed about 10K ago with new metal impellar pump. Any comments will help. I looked under several other posts, but didnt find anything similar to my issue.

Thanks,
Marty

Yep, it's the t-stat. It's getting lazy and not closing properly when cold. Makes for extended warmups.

Just replaced mine last week for the same issue.

My Mystique's cooling fans come on low speed when the needle is over the M in Normal. See if yours do. Both of the fans should run. The temp needle will drop a bit. They will run regardless of engine temperature if the a/c is in use, and should turn on with the a/c.

I just re-read his original post. Never mind, it's probably not a thermostat issue. Thought he meant to was slow to warm up to normal temp.

It's probably not overheating, either.

Only way to know for certain is measure the temp of the system with an external device such as a non-contact IR thermometer.

Typical operating temp should be between 195 and 205 F. The low speed fans should come on around 210 and the high speeds around 215.

Comparing the external readings to the ECT PIDs and the in-dash guage readings will give you a good idea of the system's performance.

It could be the thermostat. If it is not shutting completely when it is "cold", it will take a long time to warm up. And then once warmed up, if it is not opening completely, will cause the engine to run hot. For $12 or so (thermostat), it seems too cheap not to try this. Or you could just remove it (see if it is closed completely) and test it in hot water and see if it is starts opening at 190 degrees F to completely at 216 or so degrees F.
