Folks, New here to the forum. I've noticed in my 2000 Contour that when I'm just getting on the freeway (around 50-55 mph), then I floor it, it seems to kick down all the way to first with the engine roaring bloody murder. When I am at speed (65-70), then floor it, it kicks down just to 2nd as it should. Is this typical? If not, what to do? Thanks in advance!

Welcome . Scan for CEL codes and post, and is the "OD Off" light flashing too?

Not absolutely sure, but the engine sure revs a lot higher when it kicks down when I floor it at 50 than when I floor it at 65. BTW, it is a 4 banger. Any idea what kind of engine is in it?

It is a Zetec, 4-cylinder, 2-liter engine.
Drive to an Autozone or Advanced Auto and get the CEL codes scanned (free service) and then post the codes here.

Assuming you're getting good acceleration in both conditions, and you are not getting a check engine or flashing OD light, you should have nothing to worry about.
At 50, you're likely just kickin' down to the top of 2nd gear - 2 gears down from OD. At 65, you're kickin' down to 3rd most likely. As long as you're not into the redline of the tack (if you have one) don't worry about it.
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

Will do. I noticed on the fault code list a reference to shifting 3/4. Are they refering to lock-up as 4th, or is there actually a 4th gear? Maybe what I think is a downshift at high speeds is actually just the tranny dropping out of lock up. P.S. The OD light is not flashing.

"is there actually a 4th gear?" Contour ATX is 4 speed.
"The OD light is not flashing." This is good but do get the CEL codes scanned and post them.

I got on the freeway again under full throttle, and it seemed to shift normally through 3 gears, then settled into 4th once I was at speed. I guess it just likes to keep the revs high on the little engine to wring out the HP...not too shabby performance for a 2.0.
