Well i finally got the axle out of the friggin trans, and when i did i lost some fluid. Is that normal? I didn't think any should come out at all. But now i guess i am forced to change the fluid. just seein if a loss of fluid when the axle is removed is normal. thanks.

it is normal for you to lose some fluid when you pop out an axle. Unless you know exactly what is in there, I would just drain and fill it with something new. I like penzoil synchomesh, but I would search if I were you.

Thats what i am going to do. I have decided to go with B&M trick shift ATF with the ford friction modifier.

Why would you pick something like that?

Trick shift is a fluid specifically made for manual valve body automatic transimissions.

Even properly spec'd ATF gives only poor protection for our manual transmission.

The guy at the parts counter said it was full synthetic so i used it with the ford friction modifyer. It shifts like brand new again.

But anyway...i put my 2.7 qts in and i noticed it starting to drip from where the axle shaft goes in the trans. I'm like wtf? maybe the shaft isn't seated all the way...so i push and push and it doesn't budge any farther...i drop the car down torque the lugnuts and the dripping stops. I jack the car up again and it starts again. I am worried it will leak on the road but it only seems to drip when the front end is off the ground. Anyone know why this is? maybe a bad shaft seal?

Most likely damaged a shaft. Wouldn't drive the car a foot until it is buttoned up.

You probably damaged the pressed in gasket on the transmission where the axle goes in. I had to replace one once and it was a real pain. It was leaking just like yours.

Did you put on a new circlip when installing it?

If not you might expect some trouble down the road... happened to me! Guy that reinstalled my newly TH rebuilt tranny most likely didn't use a new one, or didn't seat it all the way. Shaft came out and was barely making contact... stripped the splines above the clip.

Not to mention that I added OVER 2 quarts of fluid to top it off again! Realize that totally empty the tranny holds less than 3 quarts!

So this is a potentially serious issue!

Read my thread for more info (and pics) on this dealio...
