Hi guys, I've found a "too good to be true" ebay deal. I'd like some advice on it, but I don't want to post the link, just in case it is one of those situations where it's genuinely a great deal. The item is located in Italy, but it's listed as MA. The price on it is WELL below what I'd expect to pay for it, so I'm a bit suspicious. The bidding is pre approved bidders only, so I e-mailed the seller asking if it was legit or not. He e-mailed me back with this:
Quote:
Just to let you know, the item it will be shipped from Ireland. The item it is still registered in States and it is exactly like one you will can buy from there, no modification on it. So you won't have any problems registering the item back to US. From the same reason this won't be considered and import and there won't be any custom duties to pay.
The title and the bill of
sale will be together with the item. So once you get the item, you will receive the paperwork.
I would like to close this deal through ebay because in this way we are both protected. eBay will handle this transaction for us and in this way we'll be both protected. To register the deal on ebay, Ill need a replay with yours following details:
1. full name.
2. the shipping address (I mean where to ship the bike).
3. ph# -- I need this # for the shipping service.
Thank-you,
So that's what I got. Oh and the seller has 1270 feedbacks, with a %100 rating. Do you think this is an odd deal? I simply don't have much experience with bigger ticket items on ebay (i.e. anything over $50) and am a bit nervous. Any suggestions for a reply e-mail to test the seller on whether or or not he's telling me the truth? Thanks guys, just trying not to get burned and use the vast wisdom that is CEG.

I would send am email to Ebay first and tell them what's up and ask them of any precautions you can take to cover your back. As well ass the steps they will do if in fact it does turn out to be a scam.

I would stay away from it unless you can do a C.O.D.
Also, check out his feedback.

And just how do you suppose they pre approve you?
What kind of info do they need to determine if you qualify? I'm thinking it's the kind of info you don't want to be passing out to strangers on the internet.(NO! It has nothing to do with what you're wearing)
Check his other auctions. My bet is that it's a bunch of rinky dink stuff...not cars.
Run don't walk away from this one!

Allright, sounding very much like the deal is bad. It just got taken off eBay for some reason (hoping someone else didn't get scammed) but that's that. Thanks guys.

yeah i think its a scam judging by my previous expierience.
as for the previous scam that my dad was involved in, we caught it literally an hour before he sent the money... so we got lucky that time.
also interesting is that i was cleaning out my email and i found a bunch of messages from sellers of cars i was looking at. at least 2 of the cars i was looking at were scams... good thing i went for the SVT over those

If it sounds "too good to be true" it probably is. My pops was just in a similar situation and came pretty close to being scammed. In his situation he was looking at a 69 Mustang GT for like $7000, he talked with the seller who had "just moved to Ireland" and needed to sell the car. Well after some researching the same car had sold on ebay a few days earlier for $29,000. Apparently it is not to uncommon for scammers to duplicate an auction and then take your money. Oh and he claimed that the car was still in the sates at the time, while he was in Ireland.
I would also run away from this if I were you. Just my .02 though.
Also, just curious how much of a deposit does he want? If it is high then it definetly is a scam.

All scammers use a "pre-approved" bidder list; all hi-jack a good seller account, post 1 or 3 day auctions and list the item else where in the country or world from the sellers other items.
People are getting fooled by spoof emails asking questions making them to use ebay's "usetheyellowbutton" email. When they click that link it redirects them to a spoof ebay page, they enter their seller info and poof they have their ebay account taken over by scammers.
Never log in from an ebay email. Log on in a fresh window - then you can click a link. The fresh logged in window should redirect you to the question if it is legit

Great info here guys. Knu Konceptz, that sounds like what could have happened here. It seemed to be a pretty average housewife/side business account from the previous auctions, and then straight up came out with 3 1000cc motorcycle auctions well below selling price. There was an R1, GSX-R1000, and something else. And I check back today, when the auctions should have 4 days left, and they are all gone. Glad I didn't do anything impulsive!
