My 1995 Contour 2L sometimes gets check engine light on onhighway. Now it won't start if its below 45 degrees. pouring hot water on the back side of the engine will allow it to start most times.(wife did it first) I've replaced the plugs, wires, air filter per Ford's diag. but still have the problem. Almost sure it not the TE sensor. I believe it to be either:fuel pressure regulator, O2 sensor, choke(if one). I've swaped the fuel pump relay. It sometime cuts out if not in normal temp range. Cranks but no start. Any great ideas?

Welcome to CEG!

If it starts and stays running with just a bit of gas pedal it may be a sticking IAC.

Otherwise I would think the ECT is responsible.

Since you have or had a CEL, go get it scanned.

The codes will provide an important clue as to what is wrong.

Without the code(s) you're just farting into the wind...

Welcome . Pouring water on the engine is not a good idea. There is electrical wiring near the engine which may get shorted and then you will (additional) have electrical problems.

since you have a 95 you can get the codes yourself. visit the main site and you will find instructions on how to retreive code from your 95

The codes while not running were: 172 O2 sensor Bank1 lean;
211 PIP Circuit failr (?); & 556 fuel pump relay circuit failure.
I swapped the horn relay with the pump relay, with no diff results.
The 172 should be lean since its not running. right? and 211 could mean misfire and it is not running so now what?
They said the codes get erased when the engine is turned off. Is that correct? I why couldn't they get a code when it was running. They couldn't.

No. The codes are stored.

The erratic PIP is unusual and may be caused by water getting into a connector to the EDIS ignition.

The fuel pump relay circuit failure is common in older vehicles and seems to be from corrosion under the AUX fuse and relay box behind the battery. This is not really a problem if the fuel pump still runs.

I suggest that you test the ECT.

Any details of how the engine quits would be helpfull.

Try putting the pedal halfway down when cranking. If it starts, then the problem is also a sticking IAC valve.
