most of the people on here will tell you that sony's car audio isn't that great of stuff....but some people don't mind it. A lot of the people on this site will tell you either Pioneer, Alpine, or Kenwood. And if you can get an eclipse for $150...go for it!

a lot of sony's stuff is crap, much agreed. you've just got to be selective about it. look up specs, etc. know the kind of internal power source and amplification, THD, and those type of numbers. for instance, in my old car i was running an Alpine CDA-7863, among the best decks alpine's ever put out - all features and quality, no complaints. i'm currently running a Sony CDX-M630, powering my 4 doors (Clarion SRC5795 x 4) and running signal to a Sony Xplod XD500X amp which powers 2 MTX T6124A's (12's) with 250w rms/per. the speaker set-up is exactly what i had running in my old car, running off the Alpine deck.. and i'll tell ya, i wouldn't go back. sound q went up 50% at least for me.
again though, it's all opinion. the more you hear, the more you'll know what you like.

Kenwood EZ500. Does EVERYTHING, inc. MP3 CDs, AUX in, 2 outputs, etc... I got it new for about 160$ shipped. Great interface and chassis (dark aluminum with rotary knobs), and I've had zero complaints. Example Linky.

I like the ez500, but if you are running subs you'll definately want a SW pre-out: example go Kenwood!

FYI, the pair of pre-outs on the EZ can be switched so the "rear" chanel acts as a sub pre-out.... I know this, for I have a sub. It has sub level control and everything.

Cool, he should enjoy it. I still haven't learned all the stuff it does.
