OK, so if I use a 2,5 it really doesnt matter what year i use seeing as how different pistons are going to be used anyway correct? What about the crank and rods? Are they different from a standard 2.5 as oppased to an SVT? i can save some money on a used motor if they are the same. The Extrude Honed heads and intake i dont care about, porting is definite along with custom cams. But if the non SVT motors dont have a forged crank its completely out of the question.

According to the SVT literature the crank and rods are "selected" from normal production. Selected basically means that they pass a somewhat higher quality control check but it is really basically the same. Probably just selected to be among the fewest blemishes.

If the engine code sticker on your valve cover begins with 9G, then your engine is the smaller displacement 2.49L. There are no 0G engine codes. 1G codes (2001) are also 2.49L but they dropped the Contour/Mystique. Early model codes beginning with 8A, 7A, etc are 2.54L.
Example: 9G-828-AA is a 1999-2000 2.49L Contour/Mystique 9G-833-AA is a 1999-2000 2.49L Contour SVT When they actually started putting 9G engines in vehicles, I don't know.

It's on the valve cover. Where on the cover depends on the engine. All engine codes will have a 2 digit prefix, a 3 digit middle number, and a 2 digit suffix as shown in my example. The sticker usually has other info such as engine build date, bar codes, etc.

Here's a link from some other post of someone's engine bay. You can clearly see the sticker showing engine code 7A-833-AA. For Duratec engines, it is always on the front of the LH(front) valve cover. If you don't have this sticker then, 1) It came unglued and fell off. 2) You don't have an original factory engine. picture of engine bay

I have a quick question, my sticker on the valve cover is 8A-833-AA (2-16-98). Does that mean it is a 2.54L or a 2.49L.Just curious. Thanks Ryan

I have edited the engine code prefix in my earlier post. 8G/7G should have read 8A/7A. The number is still what's important though.
