Okay first off this is NOT an oil thread! Anyone using the Shell Rotella T in the countours? If so how do you like it? Just curious, I've only seen it in the 15-40 which is what I use in my motorcycle. Anyone?

You don't want anything near that thick in that engine. 5W30 really works best. That is what the engine was designed for.

Rotella T is good oil otherwise.

Any 15w40 would mean premature failure for your oil pump. Stick with a syn. 5w30

That's BS seeing as most Mondeo's in Australia run 15W30.

Weight of oil depends on climate and WILL NOT fail the pump.

That being said, Rotella is a specialised Diesel Engine oil. Can you use it? Porbably. Would you want to? Um, why?

Arent some Mondeos diesel? Ive always thought putting in a thicker oil than neccessary will gum up the pump.

Yeah, I totally don't agree with either of you.

15w40 would not be too thick or hurt the oil pump for sure.
Maybe if you were running like SAE50 or 60 you might fry the cams and suck up some serious power, but thats about it.

Ford has had pump issues with heavy oils in the modular engine family, especially with the 4.6 SOHC engine. They especially had those problems with the 3.0 in the 99 model year.

Back to what I said in the first place, the engine was designed from a clean sheet of paper with thin oil in mind. 5W30 works so well that there is no reason to use anything else. If I were to use something else, it would probably be 0W30.

A lot of people use HDOE (Heavy Duty Engine Oil, or diesel truck oil) (Rotella T is such an oil)in their gasoline engine with good results. It has a much more robust additive package and has been found to be compatable with gasoline engines, or better said, there is nothing about it that is incompatable with gasoline engines. It would not be my first choice, but I would not be afraid of it. There is a big group at bobistheoilguy that endorse it.

Yikes.....I forsee a huge oil discussion in the brewing. IMO there is nothing wrong with "diesel oil", there is a huge debate about using motorcycle specific oils as well. I think I'm going to switch over to the Rotella T synthetic 5w-30. I mentioned the 15-40 b/c that is what has been used in my bike. And FYI the bike runs great on the "diesel oil". There is always a huge debate on that matter on the bike boards.....but thanks for the replies:-)
