If I change just my front struts (rears will probably not happen until next summer) what sort of alignment do I need? I'm thinking that a basic front wheel alignment should be adequate for now. When I do the rears then I'd go for the full four wheel deal.

In theory, changing struts will not alter alignment. It should be the same before and after. If you change to lowering springs at the same time that's another matter.

Big Jim is correct as usual. I'm doing an overhaul of my suspension system, springs, struts, control arms with ball joints, end links, and bushings. I'll have an alignment check done for free to see if it's in spec and pay for an alignment only if it's needed. I've got to see the computer printout before I'll let them make adjustments.

I admire your ambition James, I thought about doing the works too; control arms, bll joints, etc., but got scared off by that damn left control arm. At 73,000 a full front end rebuild probably fulls under nice to have and not essential. And I'm turning the car over to my daughter soon so some fresh shocks should suffice.

But alignment shops will check your alignment without paying the full deal? This car has never had an alignment as I never felt the need, steers straight and no uneven tire wear. From day one though I don't think I ever have gotten more then 20K out of a set tires. I tend to be a little heavy footed with the throttle coming out of corners.

That's a clue there... I'm getting 20k or more out of soft PERFORMANCE tires.

I get 70k to 80k out of touring tires, but I usually replace them before the tread indicates just because I don't trust old rubber. I don't bother buying regular passenger car tires. They just aren't worth the trouble IMHO, especially when you can get touring tires for a really good price these days.

And YES, a good shop will put your car on the lift & check your alignment for you without charge. I make an appointment for an oil change & ask them to check the alignment while I'm there, just so I feel it's not a total waste of time for them.
