just curious if anyone here has an entertainment server and if so, what brand/model is it?

i have been debating for about a month now whether i want to invest in an actual entertainment server or not. we get a good dealer discount on them through work, but i can't really find any features (other than a touch-screen remote control) that my current entertainment server (modded xbox) doesn't provide. anyone have experience with an entertainment server? worth the investment?

I built one from spare PC parts I had. Added 700GB of hardisk storage and hooked it up my home network(hardwired). It's serving all my music(MP3 and FLAC), my movies(*.vob, MPG1/2, .mov) and my pictures( JPG's ) throughout my home. It's idling when not serving so I plan to run some video converters in the background mode and maybe P2P.

It's doing what I need to do - serve media files to bedroom, living room and nook. I highly recommend it.

FYI, it's AMD XP2100, 512MB memory, no CD, no video card(integrated video), no sound card.

right, but that's already what i have with my modded xbox. networked games, movies, music, and pictures along with web browser and some other tools. that's why i was curious about actual name brand entertainment servers (not just networked computers). thanks for the input though

Stick two TV tuners in a built multimedia PC and you have the capability of multiple TiVos (provided you have a cable connection that accepts multiple tuned stations). That's what one of my project partners did.
