I'm trying to reformat my laptop but the damn thing doesn't want to. I'm going through command prompt and typing in format c:
Then it goes "WARNING, ALL DATA ON NON-REMOVABLE DISK DRIVE C: WILL BE LOST! Proceed with Format <y/n>?"

I select "yes" but then I get this message:
"Format cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Format may run if this volum is dismounted first. ALL OPENED HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID. Would you like to force a dismount on this volume? <y/n>" I hit yes then it says "Cannot lock the drive. The volume is still in use."

Then the computer flips me off and says, "nice try, dick."
Why won't it work? It's making me so angry that I want to kick a puppy. Any suggestions?

Why don't you just format from the windows install cd? If gives you the option to do this if you are putting xp (or later) on.

LOL!

Inset Winblows disk and reformat that way. You CAN'T reformat from the disk which Windows is running on. At least not while Windows is RUNNING!

Yeah, I figured things had changed. The last time I reformatted a hard drive was like in 1994. Apparently computers have changed during the past 12 years... Damn terrorists.

Ya, DOS is gone now... been gone since XP came out (it was inaccessible, but still there, in ME). XP is very similar to 2000/NT in that it's stand alone (not built on top another OS, which for 3.x/9x/ME was DOS).

All the command prompt is now, is just a shell. It just feeds the commands to XP to do the work.

But like the other guys said... put the XP disc in and boot off it... it'll be like "you wanna install windows, fool" (I swear it says it just like that!). After the license agreement, it'll have a sorta FDISK thing goin on where you can delete the partitions and make some new ones (NTFS is what they use now)... then install Windows, yay!

Another way to do it is autorun the CD while windows is running, select "Install Windows" and do "new install." It will wipe the drive and start installing. This doesn't work sometimes, though...
