I have used these forums in the past and they have prooved quite helpful for my 99 svt. Like many others my svt is the result of a failed vortech (I am not the original owner so it's 2,500 for the jackshaft upgrade). Anyway, upon startup I heard what I thought was the sound of a bearing or some plumbing failing on me. Upon further review I believe that this may be an alternator issue. The tach jumps untill the whining subsides. It will then stall at any random time while on the road and may or may not start again right away. It cranks and all the electronics work it just wont fire. I have not yet checked the charging voltage because it is currently dead. I was under the impression that a battery could sustain the motor for at least a while, or is this not the case on this vehicle. Please help I should note that I have no codes other than high intake temp (resulting from a no longer spinning impellar I presume). Any thought would be appreciated.

First, recharge the battery fully with charger, start car, if it does start, measure voltages. If less than 13Volts, alternator or wiring trouble, 13.8V to 14.5V OK. You might also have a bad battery that won't charge.

FYI, the battery will only keep the car going for 40 miles or so, if you're lucky. The only time I've seen a battery last significantly longer was when a deep cycle marine battery was used.

Welcome . If the battery hasn't been changed in 4 years or so, you may also be due for a new one. After charging the battery, with engine off, lights on for one minute, voltage across terminals should be 12 to 12.5.

I just threw in a new optima and I know it is fine. I managed to jump it yesterday and the friggen thing not only started but it charged. Voltage was fluctuating however at about 13.5 give or take a volt. The scary thing is that when I took it close to redline and back down, it would just about die @ 500rpm, jump to 1500, and then hover around 1000. I'm hoping this is the cars way of dealing with inconsistant voltage readings that it is getting. If not then I have no idea. I'm going to start in on the alternator replacement this weekend and from the sounds of it it will suck. This may come down to process of elimination. If anyone could drop some names of any good high output alternators for the svt I would appreciate it. Not to mention durable.... (I don't want to change it out again any time soon

Unless you absolutely NEED a higher output ALT, don't waste your time.. The OEM alternators put out about 130A, which is high for a stock alternator.

It will support all but the most monstrous of systems.
