Well thought out. Heat soak is not an issue limited to the Contour. Here are the intakes I have narrowed down to:

If thats a plexiglass window on the second I say go for #2 for sure, Pete. Its easier to keep tabs on your filter, not to mention I like the polished intake pipe better.
Price difference?
Back on topic. AutoX, Ive been wanting to make something very similar to this for a while now, you may have just given me my motivation. Considering it can be done for next to nothing if you have minimal skills, why the hell not give it a shot.
I was thinking after I made mine that I would use it as a mold a make one out of fiberglass or something that might not absorb so much heat [as the metal]. That you use some reflective tape on the outside. I dunno.

AutoX:
Rather than trying to seal it to your car, using weatherstripping of some kind would be a better way to go.
Put that all around the shield and not only does it look better, it also leaves more margin for error in heatshield size, and it not a semi-permanent mod.

Auto-X, have you any temperature results to post yet on your heatshield efforts or did I miss them?
Is a how-to in progress?
I am way OVERDUE to do something about a heatshield myself, what with track season coming up soon.

No, no temp data yet. I thought I'd found a sensor, but it didn't pan out. If anyone has ideas for a cheap thermal sensor, preferably with some sort of data logging (even just hi/lo memory), I'd appreciate it.

RadioShack has a wirelesss setup that you should be able to put in the bottom of the airbox without restricting flow too much. And for 9.99 you can start testing right away.

You mean this? http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2103730That looks good - if I can find one locally I'll jump on it! There's a lot of complaints about it in the reviews, but it's worth a shot for that kind of money. They had an older one for $5 that was meant for a car, but sold out before I could get one.
