My g/f got into an accident today with her Dodge Neon. She is fine (just a little sore neck). It was a one car accident (ie. she didn't hit anybody). She hit some ice on a back road on the way to work this morning and lost control, tried to correct it, made it worse and hit the guard rail just after a bridge. Thank God for the rail, cause she would've gone off the road and rolled about 4 times down the ravine if it had not been there. The car is a total wright-off.
I'm thinking the Mazda3 is a nice replacement.

Wow, sorry to hear that but glad she is ok. It always sucks when it's a one car thing, cause there's usually nothing to blame it on. LOL Just kidding. I once hydroplaned after it rained one day. I was only going like 35 but coming to a turn, and when I slowed down and turned, my car slid straight and I bumped against the curb hard enough that it bent the frame of the car. Had to put the donut on just to be able to turn left and get it home. No other damage to it though.
Get your girlfriend some Icy Hot, that stuff is good and might help her neck.

Thanks. Yeah, she was only doing 60 kph in a 50 kph zone. So she wasn't going fast. As she entered the turn, she put on her brakes to slow down which is what cause the mess. I told her that "A car can only do one thing at a time properly in bad conditions (within reason). Accelerate, deccelerate, and turn. Don't try to do more than one at the same time cause that's asking for trouble." I think I'm going to have to take her to an empty parking lot and teach her some skid control.
Looks like I'll be taking her on Sat to go test drive some cars.

HOLY COW! Thank God is correct. Im glad to hear she is okay. Make sure she drives right away. Cause I have had some friends that got into a car accident/near death and they didnt drive right after and it has made it difficult for them to get back in the driver seat.
Glad to hear she is okay.

Agreed my girlfriend waited after rolling her taurus 3 times( passed out to mal-nutrition ). She didn't have any serious injury either. But she didn't drive for about 3 weeks because she was so scared, and the longer she put it off though the worse the fear became.
Kind of like perfoming a speach. Its better to be first in line then to wait and let your fears grow.

At least she is okay. It's weird you pick a Mazda3 as a replacement when she had a Neon!

why is it wierd?
Also, my dad is a retired Ford manager, so I can get her the x-plan for the Mazda. I'm also looking at used Proteges/Protege 5.
It wasn't a horrific accident or anything so she'll have no problem getting back on the horse. She needs to be able to drive to get to work, so it's a non issue for us.

I'd like to start off by saying, I'm sorry for the loss of the vehicle, and am glad that your girlfriend is ok. What I don't understand is: Originally posted by 98cont-UoG-FSAE: "A car can only do one thing at a time properly in bad conditions

60kph might not be "fast," but it's breaking the speed limit, especially in what you would call "bad conditions."
Your girlfriend might consider a defensive driving course to brush up on safe driving habits.

Truthfully, it wasn't "bad" conditions as in: "snow or ice on the road, snowing, raining, etc...". It was damp and she hit a slippery patch, or something similar, maybe just a damp slipery part of the bridge (they tend to ice over faster).
I would've been driving faster than her on those same conditions (and did on my way to see her at the accident). The Neon's stock tires (just like Focus stock tires) suck big time and she should have put on snows for the winter, but money has been an issue for us.
I'd much rather have her take a skid control course than a defensive driving course as she is a good driver. She just lacks the ability to recover from a skid
a 10 kph diff is not even close to a 10 mph diff
