I'm close to pulling the trigger on going VOIP, as I'm sick of paying $60+ per month for basic phone service when I can get the same thing for $20/month with my rock-solid cable broadband connection. I'd prefer no activation or termination fees, or at least a risk-free trial without those fees. I'd also like to minimize the cash outlay for equipment. Anyone care to make a recommendation for which service to go with, and why?

We have Vonage at home and it's quite reliable. Occasionally you'll end up with bad data uploads (i.e. the person who you're calling can't hear you, but you can hear them fine) but it's become almost a nonexistant problem as we've had it longer. I believe we've had it for nine months now, perhaps longer. The manual said that we can only have one phone connected to the VOIP box (a Linksys router that came free with our system) but my dad hooked it up to our main line and can use any extension with no problem. The free long distance was the clincher for us, as both my sister and I now have friends in college who have cell phones with their hometown area codes.

I've gone with Primus (canadian company) which was cheaper than Vonage. I can say I've had little problem with my VoIP. Having said that the only real reason I have a phone is for when my internet is out. thus if I have to call my ISP or someone important, I'm pretty much SOL. its something to consider.

my mother got Time Warner's cable phone set-up (Roadrunner). she loves it. she makes a lot of overseas calls and it is a huge savings for her. she hasnt complained of any issues with it.

I've had Vonage for close to 2 years now and no real problems. Get VoIP and you will be happy. The best bang for the buck, if you ask me. I average close to 1800 minutes a month and pay $28!

Checkout Broadvoice.com . I had their service for a while but dropped it due to a new cell phone plan through work. Cheapest plan was is $9.95 a month for in-state calls.

It's not big here (yet), but Skype is signing up something like a million new customers a month over in Europe. Can't beat the price (free). http://www.skype.com/

I've got Packet8. Had it for a few years. It was kind of iffy at first, but with a few enhancements for their equipment, it's great. E911 is cool, plus you can fax now.

I tried Skype with a friend who was in Europe last winter. It's good for a free service, but there's a few second time delay between conversation, enough to make it awkward to try and talk to someone. Perhaps they've fixed that limitation in the past year, I don't know, but it was enough for me to stop bothering with it.

I have Vonage and I love it. Never had a problem with it so far.
If you go with Vonage, PM me so you can use me as a reference!!! I get two free months, or something like that!!!
