My mom's "new" house has one phone jack that isn't working. I'm hoping that it's just a problem with the wiring here at the jack (see picture below). It's basically one phone line that was cut in half and a jack was wired into place b/ the two ends. However, it's older wiring and I'm not sure about if the colors are matched up correctly or not. Can anybody tell or point me somewhere that might help? Thanks!

i'm not 100% sure, but i don't belive you can wire a jack like that. the jack must be the end of the line run.

Ya, like the article says, if she only has 1 phone line, only the 2 middle pins are used. Red and Green if wired correctly.

No, you can .. my parents wired two jacks like that in our house (granted they were the more modern jacks, but the wiring was the same).

Nice crimping job on that eye connector (non needed!)
Be careful of the voltage, it bites!

I wondered about the crimping on there... I've never gotten shocked playing with phone lines before, hopefully that's not true.

It looks like the phone jacks were wired incorrectly in the first place. The colors that matter on the jack itself are the red and green wires. Red is positive (ring in phone terms) and green is negative (tip in phone terms) The actual house wiring is a newer color code though. It looks to be at least a 3 pair cable (the picture is a little dark. Anyway, the color code for this wiring is as follows: first pair is blue/white (solid is ring, striped is tip) second pair is orange, third is green, fourth would be brown.
Now judging by the crimped on connectors, it looks like either the house was wired incorrectly in the first place and the person wired the solid orange for the red and the solid green for the green, or you may have put the connectors on there just trying to connect similar colors. The problem with this is that each pair is twisted so that no two wires from different pair touch in the cables for very long that way if you have more than one line, the noise does not bleed onto the other lines. Cat 3 wire has 3 twists per like inch or half inch and cat 5 has 5 twists.
If the house was wired incorrectly and they used orange for red and green for green, just reconnect it and if it still does not work, replace the phone jack.
If the house was wired correctly, you should wire the blue wire to the red on the jack and the white w/ blue stripe to the green on the jack. Hope that helps. Depending on whether there were ever multiple phone lines in the house before, you may want to try wiring the orange pair if the blue does not work and then green pair.

Just noticed that the jack may have a blue/ white pair on it, can you tell if they go to the two middle pins? if so, use those colors on the jack.

Why not just look inside a jack that is working and wire the one in question the same way?
