So I went to the local autozone to get my codes read and I already figured the problem out but needed it to be erased. This guy tells me that NY want let them erase the codes?? is that true?? I am from NC and anyplace will erase them with no problem. If anyone is near the Poughkeepsie area and has a reader, could someone do me a favor.
thanks

Not sure what the thread meant or was supposed to mean, but anyhow, if you want to reset your computer CEL - just open your fuse box, remove the fuses # 4 and # 11, give it a coupla minutes and put 'em back - this will effectively reset your computer unless the problem causing CEL wasn't fixed - then u will get your CEL again in a matter of a few hours. I still don't know why would ya need to have somebody owning an OBD scanner but these guys got it - it's like 10 minutes drive from Poughkeepsie - up in Beacon. Go to Driving Directions

I've had Advance Auto dump codes before for me, and that was in NY. Sounds like the shop you went to consisted of a bunch of a-holes.

nope, technically with the new inspection process it is illegal for them to dump the codes..the fine could reach into the thousands if they wanted to pursue it

How do you figure. When you dump the codes, you sent a P1000 code, which tells any inspection that the codes have been cleared. The P1000 goes away when a full driving cycle has been completed. The inspection stations know if they codes have been cleared, and they won't pass a car unless its been through a full driving cycle and has no codes. I don't think it is illegal to clear the codes, perhaps I'm wrong...

you are wrong...the garage i work in required me to get an inspectors liscense, even though i dont work in the garage...it is illegal,if i was at work i'd pull it from the book.

I believe you, I just think its weird/sucks. I got a Ford dealership that takes care of me, so I'm on scan-tools for free.

If you have a CEL on and you clear the codes or disconnect the battery what happens is the ECM has whats called readiness cods that will have to reset by themselves, The only way they reset is by YOU driving the vehicle for about 50 miles I believe, after that you have to let the car cool down completly and repeat at least 3-4 times for the ECM to reset. If you do not do that and try to get a NYSI done you will fail due to the system not being set ie: readiness codes. Originally posted by acammer: How do you figure.
