When I got my 1999 Contour, I noticed that the trunk didn't open by itself (at all). Then I noticed that there are no components to lift it open. The hinges and such are there, but just nothing to push it open.

What are those called so that I can search around for them?

Thanks!

There are also hydraulic cylinders that assist opening and, I assume, hold the trunk up when open. They're known to deteriorate and IIRC a beyotch to replace (though I've never done it myself). The spring shown above simply pops the trunk out of the latch, alleviating a problem where you'd press the button to open the trunk only to find that it isn't released--a major PITA when your hands are full.

I think you are referring to the Trunk Struts. They are black. Located inside the trunk on the top left and right. They help support the trunk up when open. They aren't really easy to remove. I replaced mine a while ago with some from a junkyard. Took me a while to change them.

OH, and to piggyback on these guys...

The trunk isn't supposed to pop itself all the way open when you release it. Think of a station wagon/hatchback where you have to lift the hatch/gate up. The struts are there just to hold the trunk up, which doesn't work well in high winds...

On both of the Contours I've had, neither of them had the trunk move at all when you release it, and I've never had problems with them relatching.

Replacing the struts is fairly simple. small hands are a must, or it'll take a little while longer. A few basic tools, and a few moments of your time.

Big Jim outlined a method (IIRC) within the last 6-8 months.

The trunk pops open just fine, but the struts are simply not even there. So that is what I need to find is "trunk struts."

I am 6'1" with fairly large hands, but I can recruit my wife to help out with any parts that require smaller hands.

Thanks for everyone's help!

Ahh... so it doesn't even hold itself up...

My 81 Caddy Coupe Deville was like that. The huge trunk combined with the 5th wheel thingy on it made it SUPER heavy. Had to cut a 2" thick broomstick to hold it open... broke smaller things like long ice scrapers.
