Hey guys. My check engine light came on about a week ago so I went to Advance Auto and had it checked out. They told me it was insufficient EGR flow. They told me that i needed to change the EGR valve. I went ahead and picked the part up while I was there (amazing they had it in stock) so it would save me a trip later. Then i came home and started looking on CEG to make sure that is what should be done to fix the CEL. After quite a long time searching, I am finding that there are about 5 or 6 other things that i could be. I am lost! What should I do first to save myself a lot of time and money? Thanks guys for all your help in advance. BTW, 99 V6 ATX

well I think the first place to start for insuficient flow is to clean the tb passages, you may or may not need the valve. if you have searched around you should have found info on how to test the valve by placing a vaccum on it to see if the idle stumbles
so start there and see what happens

insufficient egr flow is P0401

FYI, it is almost NEVER the EGR valve. Those things are expensive too, so be ready to return it & use the money to take your babe out to dinner or sup'm.
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

Clean the passages. There's great instructions here if you search for them. You'll need an egr gasket and a tb gasket, iirc.
If that doesn't work, it could be the DPFE. That usually throws a different code, iirc. Search on DPFE and you should get some discussion about it.
Those are what I would chase.
I would also inspect every vaccum line I could find. Vaccum leaks can wreck havoc on the intake system.

I have P0402... I also have the diagnostic paper with the description/possible causes/diagnostic aides. There are 10 different possible causes... The mechanics quoted me around $250 for the repair (diagnostic test was free).

If the idle is good replace the DPFE.
If the idle is bad, pull the vacuum to the EGR valve. If the idle is still bad, replace the EGR valve.
Plug the vacuum back in from above step. Unplug the elecrtical connector from the EVR. If the idle stays bad, replace the EVR. If the idle gets better, replace the DPFE.
If the EVR is still opening the EGR valve, you either have an EVR wiring problem or false output from the computer.
My bet is on the EVR. If the EVR starts leaking the EGR valve will stay open.
