I've been using AVG Free for many years now on all my computers at home and it has worked great. Updates the virus database files daily and best of all its FREE.

I was going to post this idea. since it is made by microsoft it runs as an extention of your OS, so scans are quick and easy. Does a good job with spyware and some viruses.
avast works really good but use zone alarm with it. i work at a computere shop reparing computers and i use it on every computer with a virus problem the best thing about it is that you can do a boot time scan as well as install in in safe mode
