I'm perusing this car auction site and I came across this Ferrari 330 GTS. So I'm reading the specs on this car and I'm thinking to myself that this little car with a V-12 putting out 345 HP has to be a very fast little SOB. As I continued to read I came across this little factoid! Quote:
The top speed of a 330 GTS was over 150mph with a 0 to 60mph time of seven seconds, or a bit less. A quarter-mile time of just less than 100mph should be expected at around the 15 second mark.
Now for those that can't spot tongue in cheek humor ignore the title but my real point is don't these performance numbers seem low for whats in this car? Is it that big azz motors weight that robs this car of performance?
PS I can't find a weight for this car.

That could be gross horsepower rating, instead of SAE, which was used after 1973 or 1974 IIRC. Also, modern cars may use their power more "efficiently" for lack of a better term, meaning the drive train robs less power than older designs. And if you compare tires, I'll bet that Ferrari has pretty skinny tires compared to my SVT, which means that traction could be a factor, as well. Just as in many things, it's about more than peak numbers. It's about the total design of the vehicle. That being said, I'll still trade my CSVT for that Ferrari tomorrow, LOL Scott

A couple of things come to mind for the 15 sec quarter, one it could be a guesstment, as these cars were not built for the quarter mile. A 100 mph trap speed sounds high for a 15 sec. time, it probably has road gearing and widely spaced gearing in the trans. The V-12 was not a torque monster motor, it is a high rpm motor so it takes a while for it to get to it's power band. I would bet also that the small tires and lack of traction could account for it also. It is a nice car for what it is, a classic sports car and I bet a blast to drive, I would own one if I could afford it.

Yep, many classic sports cars are not that fast compared to modern cars. There are a few Ferraris the Tour could smoke... 308 GT4 and Mondial off the top of my head

It's also a 2v 4L from the 1960's in a car weighting almost 3000lbs that was built to go around a track and not a drag strip. I would still trade my house for it though. Don't need a bed anyway; I'll sleep in my ferrari.

Psst.. Our car weighs 3000lbs.. and uh.. if you hadn't realized.. our platform was made for "going around a track" (BTCC heritage, etc), not a drag strip.
so this IS apples to apples, you know?

I remember seeing a show on tv that said that the power per liter today is that of a race car 40 or 50 years ago. Those cars handled great for their time and pretty well for today. I would say a car built in the 60's doing 15's is pretty good and still faster than most stock contour's. Plus those cars are so sexy, really that's what it's about. Just imagine yourself in a 60's spy film and it will be loads of fun. Atleast that's what I would do.
