a blown megafuse would be the same, electrically, as removing the alternator.. it would, in no way, caus the battery voltage to DROP to 9V after starting.. the battery would remain as it was, slowly draining from powering the car itself.

I think the new battery isn't really fully charged. If it does drop to 9 volts really soon, from a fully charged battery, something is shorted out.

I'm having a similar trouble on my Contour V6 98... but my battery light (new battery) is flickering at highway speed (over 70 miles and/or 3000rpm) so I assume the alternator cuts out (intermittent charges) but only at higher speeds?? Does this mean it will not necessarily show a faulty system (below 14V) at low or idle? How would the service tech test and correctly diagnose a full load speed test? All my cables look new and tight and 64,000 miles sounds quite early to change alternator... Looking forward to hear from you guys!

Higher RPM means the alternator brushes are probably floating and it sounds like early failure to me, too. The alternator probably won't show low voltage at idle. Try measuring the idle voltage. Does the battery light come on if you rev the engine briefly (parked) above 3000? If it does, measure the battery voltage then, too.

We checked it parked and we rev it up till 4000 with radio, headlights and fan at full blast, the voltage didn't move and stood still at 14.2 (and the battery light did not come on). And talking about another kind of floating brushes..., I live on the west coast and it's been pissing rain for 28 days here now, and I wonder if this could be related as I note this alternator is located down low... But maybe not either and could be signs of early failure like you say...?

I had a similar problem on my wifes 96 with 2.5l. The cable from the battery to the mega fuse had the insulation rubbed off. The mechanic rerouted it slightly and used a heatshrink sleave to correct the fault.
Good Luck Dan

I had the same problem on my 98 se 2.5 Alternator went out, but i didn't feel like changing it myself as its location is less than optimal. Once the alt. was replaced it went out within a wk. Had the shop replace it again. Again the alt. quit working in a couple of days. Two problems, one the Battery cables had melted together underneath the battery and behind the engine btw the firewall. The other problem was the mechanic forgot to replace the splash guard and with all the rain we had it was flooding the alt. everytime i turned a corner. The shop had to replace the alt. a third time, they were not happy, but i was less happy. They got the hint after i threatened to stop payment on the check i wrote them.
