I received the shifter for X-mas (thank you Santa ) and installed it shortly there after. The install was straight forward, with the exception of the centering spring. After searching CEG, I decided to just leave the stupid thing out. The throws seem very short and solid, although going into/out of 5th gear now takes more work than with the stock shifter. The other gripes I have are: 1). The shifter seems to hit a hard stop in 2nd and 4th gear, but not in 1,3,5 (as mentioned by others). I realize some modification w/ a dremel can be performed, but it seems like a little better desing could have been employed to avoid this issue. 2). The short shifter really increases how far I need to reach to shift now. I guess I was just hoping for a feel like in my 96 Probe GT, where the little nub was right next to my side for fast, fun shifting! Overall I'm very satisfied w/ the shifter.

From Terry... NOT a good idea...the spring is there for a reason!..

...forget the Dremel, your shift cable (with the WHITE end) needs adjustment!
I don't know how many times I hear people messing this up!...Understand HOW the cables and stoc shifter work first....Running with the cables incorrectly adjusted will screw up shifter forks and syncros in a very short time...(buy a CD from todras!)

The stock shifter worked fine, no hitting in any gear. Since the bottom of the B&M is very similar (indentical?) to the stock shifter, I wouldn't have thought there would be an issue. None the less, maybe I will have to get one of those CD's....
As for the spring, I tried to put it back in but just couldn't remember the proper orientation. Does anybody have any pics of the shifter assembly/spring that they would like to share?

Are you referring to something specific to the B&M? If not, then this topic was put to death years ago! Dozens and dozens of people leave it out and dozens have left it in. I tried it both ways and I left it out, but then I don't have a B&M, I have a steeda. The shift tower itself is spring loaded and this will center it to some degree unless the shifter is full of slop from worn parts anyway. At least on 98+ transmissions.

5+ years without a centering spring and no issues were caused from it....

I left the sring out and after 4 years of driving the car cant say i have had a problem. Also i too had the dreaded shifter "bottom out" on 2nd and 4th. It shifted okay normaly and it wouldnt bottom out. But when i shifted real hard or fast the cable would strech just a bit. it would bottom out and sometimes it would cause me to miss the shift. Anyways Todras is right you need to jack up the car get a friend to help and adjust the end link. Its pretty easy to do. takes a little time but well worth it.

The spring give the stick a 'center gate' position in neutral(between 3rd & 4th)this is the position to check/adjust cable lengths....
if you can't work out how the centering spring is refitted and how it works....dream up a reason to say it's not necessary!

Or just do some research on CEG and see that dozens upon dozens of people have installed short throw shifters and ditched the centering spring(including myself) and have had no problems with their transmission, or their shifters.
Ya know, I'm surprised my car hasn't just self-imploded by now. What, with this 3L hybrid(OMG!! ), the ATF + FM in my tranny(NO WAY!! ) and now the dreaded no centering spring(WTF!?!? ).
All in all, I'm glad I haven't listened to ALL of the hype on CEG and can make some decisions based on real world testing. Then again, I might go out to the garage on May 1st and it'll be in 1000 pieces!

Oh my God! You're using ATF + FM???
Your car will explode into 1000 pieces by May 4th. If you are lucky, the absence of your centering spring will allow the pieces to explode out further than normal making it take twice as long to recover them all!
Better get that fixed! lol
