I'm starting this thread because I want to hear honest answers. Let's hear about all our experieces with Unions. Good Bad Indifferent. Don't mention who you work for.
How long you have been a member? How much are yearly dues? What are your metings like? Informative, waste of time, etc.. If you could, would you Decert, Why?
Let's not flame each other! We always get off topic when that starts. Be open and honest. Let's hear it. An open dicussion is always good.

Unions make me pay more to ship things, buy a car, and leave New Yorkers walking to work in the winter. .... They used to be a good idea, I've think they've outlived their usefulness.

Arite.. I'll have a go at it.
I *was* a union member at my old job for almost 2 years.
Never went to a meeting.
Dues were 1 hour's pay + 50cents (bi-weekly).
If it wouldn't have prevented me from getting a promotion (since the whole place was union), I would have left.

Never have been a union member.
Overall: Bad. See them as organizations more in pursuit of their own power and the employer as evil versus partners in a process. See their methods of support and negotiation as counterproductive to excellence and ambition.

? ? When businesses do it, it's called a â??trustâ?, a â??cartelâ?, â??price fixingâ?, â??unfair and deceptive business practicesâ?, etc.? It is very much illegal, and very rightly so.? Competetition is one of the most vital forces in capitalism, and practices which undermine it are destructive to the economy itself.
? ? No reason why the same prohibitions against anti-competitive practices among businesses ought not apply to groups of workers as well.? Unions ought to be illegal.? Either that, or we should repeal all of the laws that prohibit businesses from engaging in anti-competive activity.

A family business went down because of the 5 unions in house. There comes a point where the unions need to make concessions instead of demands. If the company is in financial distress, back off. Some of the stuff they demanded was outrageous. Who gets their birthday off with pay? Ridiculous.

There was a time in this country when unions were needed; when the everage person was being abused by the few big employers out there. That time has long since passed. On the average, unions these days are a detriment to thier respective industries, and are only out to serve the desires of the union officials.
The American auto industry is a prime example; where on the average, the union culture promotes poor workmanship and higher product costs. If it continues unchecked, the modern auto unions will run the American car companies completely into the ground.*
* - Note that unions certainly aren't the only problem that american carmakers have, but they are a very big one.
