This website has been great. I recently purchased a 98 Mercury Mystique LS with only 29,000 miles on it a few weeks ago. The car has had some of the common problems; i.e. I think I have exprienced moosing once and my trunk is wet. I have a right and center tail light and reflector seal on the way and a trunk vent also, and I figure I can live with the moosing for now and it only happened once on a very cold morning.

In any event I have a couple of problems that I did a search for to no avail. The first is that it seems that my headliner is seperating at the very front and over a few days leaves black and grey debris on the dashboard. Theres is a uniform gap that runs the length of the headliner, and I was wondering if a trim piece is missing and if not if anyone has had this problem and if so what did you do to fix it?

The second thing that when I hit a large pot hole, I can hear a large scraping sound, and I was wondering if this might be the springs struts or control arm bushings, but I will be taking it in to be looked at in a few days.

Thanks

Can't help you with the headliner, maybe someone will chime in. Any pics?

What are your mods? (Springs, struts, wheels, etc.)

Thanks for the reply;

No pics of the headliner yet, but I am not sure if I will be able to take pics as it is at the front corner of the headliner, but I will give it a try with the digital camera tomorrow.

No suspension mods yet and there don't appear to be any done by the prior owner. I don't know if they had the spring guards put on and that is what is causing the noise, but it seems that the steering is not as tight as it should be although the springs and struts seem okay. I plan on driving the car cross country on a 2-3 week trip, so I would like to to handle as well as possibile. Afterwards I will mainly use the car to commute between NC and NY City. I plan on getting a BAT suspension set up looking for a fair compromise between good handling and good ride (since the car will spend about 20% of the time on bad NY City streets), but want to make sure the base suspension is sound first, and I do have a warranty on the vehicle as well. Right now I have stock 15" wheels and I plan on adding some 16x7.5, don't want to go 17 as that might rough up the ride a bit too much. I was told by the dealer that the vehicle was owned by an older couple that traded it so again I don't think it was moded or driven hard, but I also don't think it was lovingly cared for either.

Any help would be appreciated.

GTO Pete, just got the call from the dealership, appears the crunching noise was a cracked spring, they are replacing under a recall and replacing the struts under warranty.
